WHAT A MONEY SHAVER

How an old pair of JEANS could prolong the life of a razor and save you up to £180 a year

By running the blade against denim it acts as a sharpening tool, prolonging the life of the razor

FED UP of forking out every month for a new razor? You're not alone - it's a bugbear for many who are forced to buy a new one regularly in order to stay hair free.

But there's a quirky trick that could save you tons of money on razors, and those who do it insist that it works every time.

Prices for razors vary wildly - with women's razors normally costing more.

A cheap packet of razors usually costs between £2 - £5, while a top range one, for example the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Flexball Power razor, costs around £15.

There are dozens of videos on YouTube demonstrating the little-known method of jean sharpening, which could save up to£180 a year on razors (based on someone paying £15 a month for a razor and replacing it monthly).

The method is simple. You sharpen the blade by gently pushing it along a pair of jeans, thereby prolonging its life and meaning you won't need to buy another razor for a year.

The trick is simple. You can either use a current pair of jeans (the razor blade won't ruin them, but it may cause wear over time), or an old pair of jeans.

Put the jeans on a flat surface, make sure the razor blade is clean and dry, and run the razor along the jeans. Doing this a dozen times should be enough to sharpen the blade.

Those who sharpen their razor in this way will stop the blade from becoming dull over time.

Many people say that after a year of sharpening, the blade starts to become a bit scruffy and should be replaced.

Geoff, an English teacher living in the Philippines, swears by the jean sharpening method and alerted The Sun Online to the lifestyle hack.

He claims to have used the same Gillette razor every day for the past nine months by using the denim trick.

He told The Sun online: "It really does work. Gillette blades are expensive and this prolongs their life for ages."

He added: "In fact I sharpened my nine-month old blade this morning by using the method, the blade is still sharp and I always get a close shave. It's a great way to save money as blades are quite expensive."

Razor stropping is in fact a well-known method of sharpening blades, but it's usually done with a strip of leather.

As jeans are in everyone's home, this is a cheaper and more convenient method to using a leather strap.
