Five ways you can get fit without spending a penny including free exercise classes and borrowing a fitness DVD

If your New Year's resolution is to get fit but you're lacking the funds, here are five ways to get fit for FREE

IF you have resolved to get fit this year, but are reluctant to pay £60 for gym membership each month, there are ways you can get fit without spending a fortune.

With some hard work and a lot of effort, you can get fit for free this year. Read our five-step guide below to find out how.

1. Free exercise classes

If you live in London, Bristol or Edinburgh, is a free workout group that meets up a few times each week at 6:30am. You can just turn up in the morning without booking.

The classes are meant to be fun and spontaneous, and everyone is welcome, regardless of their fitness level.

Londoners can also take advantage of free in-store fitness classes held by retailer Sweaty Betty, which are available to book one week in advance.

All instructors are certified experts and classes range from yoga, box-fit, Pilates, running and circuits.

Also in London,  offers free exercise classes by fully qualified and registered coaches.

The classes - which include box-fit, tennis and dance - last for one hour and are for all ability levels and ages. Classes are in most London boroughs.

Outside of London, parkrun organises free, weekly 5km runs throughout the country. The runs take place in parkland areas and all abilities are welcome.

2. Borrow exercises DVDs for free

Fitness DVDs can be a great way to motivate and inspire you into exercising, but at around £10 a pop they aren't cheap.

But there's a way of getting fitness DVDs for free, by simply checking your local library.

Not only do you get the DVD for free, but you can also sample lots of different videos to see which workout suits you best.

Libraries are completely free to join, you just need a form of ID that shows your name and current address (driving licence, council tax or utility bill).

3. Free personal trainer

If you want the motivation of a personal trainer but can't stump up the cash for one, why not try a free fitness coach in the form of a podcast.

4. Join a green gym

Across the UK there are hundreds of outdoor gyms people can use for free. While it's not ideal during the winter, these gyms contain a range of exercise equipment, including weights and machines, aimed at helping everybody to get fitter.

The gyms are also green in that they generate electricity to charge phones, power lights and put electricity back into buildings.

If there's a particularly cold snap and you'd rather visit an indoor gym, you can take advantage of free one-day gym passes most gym chains offer.

The gym will likely try their best to get you to sign up for paid membership afterwards, but there's no obligation for you to do so.

5. Get free gym equipment

People often give away fitness gear they no longer want on sites such as , and .

You can snap up weights, skipping ropes and exercise balls for absolutely nothing if you look around.

Freegle, for example, lets you look for free items according to your local area. In Stockport, you can pick up a free exercise bike, while in Warrington you can get a free exercise bench in good condition.
