Should tomatoes, bread and coffee be kept in the fridge? Chances are you’re storing them wrong

DO you keep your tomatoes, bread and coffee in the fridge?

Well, it turns out that you may be doing things wrong, according to Monday night’s episode of Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped.

When it comes to keeping certain foods in the fridge, many Brits disagree on what should and should not be kept cool.

So what’s the verdict?

Bread

Don’t keep your bread in the fridge – it will go stale more quickly

While some may believe popping their loaf of bread in the fridge, the fact of the matter is that it actually goes stale quicker when kept this way – so stick to using your bread-bin with this one.

Tomatoes

You may want your juicy tomatoes to last longer, but keeping them in the fridge is a sure fire way to ruin their taste, according to experts on the show.

Despite having  in the past, some think that both the taste and the texture of the much-loved salad staple is affected by cool conditions.

Tomatoes taste best when not kept in the fridge

It is true that keeping tomatoes in the fridge stops them going off as quickly, so if you keep them in the fridge, the show’s experts advise that you take them out 24 hours before you eat them, to help ensure a better tasting tom’.

When it comes to storing your caffeine fix, some packets of coffee say that the fridge is the best place, some say the freezer is and others say that an air container will do – so it can all seem a bit confusing to coffee drinkers.

But it seems that the fridge is a bad idea when it comes to a decent cuppa.

Aromas from the fridge can reduce your overall coffee drinking experience – so if you enjoy an aromatic blend, don’t keep it in the fridge.

Keeping coffee in the fridge can change the taste of the drink

If you get through your coffee pretty quickly, away from sunlight, in a cool place is best.

But, if you aren’t going to drink your coffee speedily, and you need it to last three to four weeks, the freezer is your best bet – adding boiling water will defrost it when you want to drink it.
