Pizza lovers pay FOUR times the price for Domino’s in the UK than in other parts of the world – why?

A large margherita pizza bought in the UK costs a hefty £14.99, but in New Zealand it costs just £2.87

ANYONE thinking of ordering a takeaway pizza from Domino's tonight might want to think again, as it has been revealed that UK customers are paying FOUR times more for pizza than in other parts of the world.

While a large margherita pizza in the UK costs £14.99, in New Zealand it is just £2.87 - a huge difference of £12.12.

In fact, pizzas are so reasonable in New Zealand that Domino's is classed as a "cheap takeaway" by locals.

Figures by revealed that it is a similar situation in Australia, with a large margherita pizza costing just £3.04.

Prices are a bit higher in the United States, but still much cheaper than over here, at £11.93 for a large cheese and tomato pizza.

It's not just margherita pizzas that are cheaper.

Kiwis, Americans and aussies pay less for most other pizza flavours as well, including pepperoni, Hawaiian, mighty meaty, supreme and veg-e-roma.

A pepperoni pizza in Britain costs £16.99, but down under it's just £3.04, and in New Zealand it's a measly £2.87.

Domino's lovers have complained in the past about the price difference, with many confused at the discrepancy.

One pizza fan wrote on Twitter: "Everything in Australia is so much more expensive, apart from Dominos where you can get a pizza for £3."

But why is it so expensive in the UK?

Louise Butler, a spokesperson for Domino’s told The Sun Online: “The taste of Domino’s is unique, with great quality fresh ingredients.

"The average price our customers pay for a medium cheese and tomato is less than £8 because of our competitive deals and bundles and we believe this offers fantastic value.

"International comparisons do vary greatly, including, rent, petrol, labour and food costs - for example, in the US sales tax, can be as low as 7 per cent in some states, whereas here in the UK VAT is 20 per cent.”

So there you have it, costs such as rent and petrol have driven up pizza prices in the UK, but that doesn't excuse the fact that a basic cheese and tomato pizza costs a massive £14.99 - considering it costs just £1.25 to make, according to Metro.

Last week the pizza chain was slammed online after a shopper in Asda snapped a Domino's worker bulk-buying £1 bags of potato wedges.

Twitter user Sinead Sarah said she saw the Domino’s worker in his uniform at the checkout with what appeared to be around 15 bags of the potato snacks.

Domino's sells its potato wedges for £3.99 a portion.

At the time a spokeswoman for Domino’s said: “With a big sporting weekend, very occasionally some products may run out in our stores. We do not advocate this as a solution and are investigating.”
