A new video that followed the rigorous training of Singapore Airlines flight attendants proves just how unfair the nickname ‘glorified waitress’ really is.
In the short film, the wannabe crew members are put through their paces in 15 weeks of training – twice as long as the training courses at many other airlines.
The men and women are seen doing a number of tasks that would ready them for any type of disaster that might happen on-board a flight.
One of the most strenuous exercises, shown in the clip by , involves a simulation of an emergency landing by the plane in open sea waters.
The participants have to jump into a large pool from the door of a plane, then they attempt rescue training with a partner while fully clothed in their Singapore Airlines uniforms, as a wave machine simulates open waters.
The trainees also have to tackle a number of fires in an aeroplane cabin.
After putting on one of the standard issue smoke hoods, they then learn how fires can start in the plane ovens , but also in the toilets as a result of smokers, and what measures should be taken to deal with each one.
The training school also places a considerable emphasis on the way trainees hold themselves and how they look.
They are taught how to walk upstairs elegantly, how to stand, sit and gracefully ‘glide walk’ along the cabin aisles.
In addition, the women are taught meal etiquette and given wine-tasting classes, so that they are aware of how to serve passengers in Business and First Class.
Finally, they are taught a series of grooming practices.
These include how to look after their skin, how to wear their hair and apply their make-up, including which shades work best with the Singapore Airlines uniform.
