THIS year’s Oscars was more about the tresses than dresses.

From vintage waves to tousled buns, the A-list awards bash had it all.

Here, JENNY FRANCIS picks out five hair heroines from the red carpet and shows you how you can steal their style.

STEP 1: Comb through hair and separate into sections ready for curling. Using hair straighteners – try Lee Stafford CoCo LoCo Irons (£44.99, Argos) – curl each section into a loose wave by clamping hair near the root and twisting so it is wrapped around the irons. Pull down to the end of the hair to create a wave.

25

STEP 2: Once you have curled each section, bring  one up to your head to create a barrel curl and pin, allowing  it to cool and set. Repeat. Spritz Umberto Giannini Super Model Shape hairspray (£4.62, umbertogiannini.com) all over. When  cool, remove pins and allow  curls to fall.

25

STEP 3: Use kirby grips to pin the front section of hair to the side of the temple, behind the ear.
Tip: Cross the kirby grips over each other to lock the pins into place and ensure they do not drop. Finish with a mist of hairspray, so hair stays in place.

STEP 1: Apply a thickening product to roots and mid-lengths when hair is dry –  try Salon Science Thickening Serum (£15, Boots). Separate hair into manageable sections then loosely curl by wrapping the section around straightening irons  and pulling down to  the ends.

25

STEP 2: Section off the crown area and pin up. Backcomb underneath, place a hair doughnut over that section in the middle of the head and pin into place.

25

STEP 3: Bring the section under the doughnut up and over it, to create the faux-bob shape. Next, bring sections from the crown down across the doughnut, covering it. Tuck each one under the doughnut and pin into place, leaving a few tendrils at the front to frame the face.

STEP 1: Tilt head to the side and lift hair at the base. Apply a texture spray at the roots to create height and stop hair from slipping – try Bumble and Bumble’s Dryspun Finish spray (£9.50, bumbleandbumble .co.uk).

25

STEP 2: Split hair into a  side-parting then fix into a high-crown ponytail and secure with a snag-free band. Pull out sections on top of the head to give a messy look.

25

STEP 3: Roughly wrap the pony round the base and pin into place. Gently pull out strands at the front to soften.

STEP 1: To prep hair, apply a volume-enhancing product to roots and mid-lengths for extra fullness and grip – try Salon Science Volumising Foam (£15, Boots).

25

STEP 2: Pull hair into a low ponytail using a snag-free band, leaving the crown area sectioned off. Loosely twist and pin sections around the base of the pony to give a braided effect.

25

STEP 3: Pin parts of the crown section into the bun, leaving only a few loose tendrils around the face. Mist all over with hairspray to keep hair in place.

STEP 1:  Create a centre-parting. Straighten hair in small sections with irons, clamping at the root and pulling through hair to give a super-sleek look.

25

STEP 2: Give hair a mirror-like appearance by smoothing the sides using a shine product – try Lee Stafford’s Wet Look GeLEE (£7.99, Boots). Run the product down the hair shaft using the flat of your hands, then run a comb through to ensure the surface is completely smooth.

25

STEP 3: Use one hand to hold hair in a loose pony at the nape of your neck, then with the other twist the hair around, creating a roll shape. Pin securely into place, interlocking the kirby grips to anchor. Spritz with hairspray all over.
