Greta Garbo’s former New York apartment hits the market for £4.8million – and it looks just the same as when she died in 1990
The famously elusive Swedish-born American actress lived in the seven-room property for 40 years
AFTER she retired from the big screen at the tender age of 35, little was seen nor heard of Hollywood actress Greta Garbo until she died in 1990.
The star, who acted in 28 films in the 1920s and 30s, shunned public life and adopted a hermit-like existence.
Now the New York apartment where she lived for her final 40 years has hit the market for £4.8million (nearly $6m).
And it looks almost exactly how she left it when she passed away nearly 27 years ago, aged 84.
The seven-room Manhattan property is located on the fifth floor of the 14-storey Campanile building, built in 1927.
It's situated on East 52nd Street, overlooking East River, in a quiet cul-de-sac where elusive Garbo hid away from her fans and the media.
The home is being sold by the family of Gray Reisfield, Garbo's niece and sole heir to her estate.

The sprawling three bedroom, three bathroom apartment features an L-shaped living room, a library/den area and a private elevator lobby.
The kitchen, lounge and dining room are all decked out with extensive wood panelling - which we recently revealed is the number one feature that puts buyers off purchasing a home.
The majority of the soft furnishings are fuchsia pink-coloured, with accents of green and rich cream shades.
Garbo was renowned for disliking the publicity that came with her career, and stopped giving interviews not long after she started acting.
She frequently refused party invitations when she landed on the Hollywood scene in 1925 and wouldn't even attend her own film premieres.
Last month we told how pop singer Selena Gomez’s Texas mansion is on the market for £2.3m and comes with five bathrooms, space for eight cars and mini golf course.
We also revealed the inside of Donald Trump’s bling £80million Trump Tower penthouse that’s dripping with gold, marble and crystal chandeliers fit for a king.
Its extravagant décor was inspired by the 18th century art movement Rococo, with a focus on warm, neutral shades of cream and gold, and appears to take inspiration from the luxurious Palace of Versailles in France.
