Viagra was developed in 1989 by medical company Pfizer as it tried to find a drug to combat angina – chest pain caused by poor blood flow to the heart.

But in trials the prescription drug was found to cause long-lasting erections – and Pfizer realised it had stumbled upon a cure for erectile dysfunction.

Since then it is thought to have saved countless marriages but has also caused a few unintended mishaps.

Here we take a long, hard look at some of the strangest.

AVENGERS and Mission: Impossible actor Jeremy Renner got his Viagra prescription mixed up with his sleeping pills during a 12-hour flight to London.

The star, 46, swallowed a little blue tablet just before take-off and spent the rest of the flight squirming with embarrassment.

Jeremy said in 2012: “I took a little sleeping pill, popped it and realised nothing’s happening – but something else was happening.

“I realised very quickly that the ‘A’ was actually a little ‘V’ on the pill.

“Not only did I not sleep the entire flight but there was cramping happening. There was no walking. It was so embarrassing when I had to go to the restroom.”

KIM KARDASHIAN’S brother Rob was left red-faced on his family’s reality show after accidentally taking Viagra intended for his then-stepdad.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star had just woken up from a nap when he noticed an unsightly bulge as cameras rolled in 2009.

After seeing a doctor, Rob, now 30, later found out mum Kris had put it in Caitlyn Jenner’s coffee to spice things up.

He recalled: “It was so awkward.

“This was one of the worst things that could happen to me given that I live in a house with my mother and two little sisters.”

A HUSBAND who took 35 Viagra pills “for a laugh” ended up in hospital with a “massive erection that would not go away”.

CRICKET star Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff revealed he was once run out because he could only hop after taking three pills.

The 39-year-old, who retired in 2009, took the drug after an ex branded him a flop in bed.

Freddie said: “I didn’t realise how long they lasted. Trying to bat the next day was not easy. It wasn’t worth it either. Complete waste of time.”

AN A-list celeb asked food inventor Charlie Harry Francis to create a Viagra-laced ice cream for one of his birthday parties.

The dessert, called Arousal, was champagne flavoured, blue and each serving contained 25mg – the smallest dose – of the drug.

Charlie was made to sign a confidentiality agreement, preventing him from giving any more details about the bash, but said: “I am allowed to say that they were very happy with the end result.”

SHOP worker Benjamin Chope bought 30 Viagra pills on eBay to make jelly for colleagues on April Fools’ Day last year.

But his manager, from Newton Abbot, Devon, spent ten hours waiting for the effects of the drug to wear off in hospital.

Chope, then 24, was sacked. A judge ordered him to do 80 hours of unpaid work – possibly hard labour.
