Here’s what you need to know if you want to replicate his success…

Make friends with the right people

Mike realised that as a regular person he couldn’t get into any of the VIP parties he needed to boost his profile.

So he decided to get creative, and the social media mogul set about befriending the managers and doormen of the best New York clubs.

He would spend time chatting with them while they were on a shift or even share a cigarette with them so that he would always be top of their list.

Create a persona people want to connect with

Once he was in the party he started to tweet the celeb happenings from behind the velvet rope, but followers weren’t interested.

So he set up a separate Twitter account NYDoorman, and allowed himself to go over the top with the brand to attract a new crowd of followers.

e said: "For whatever reason, the nightlife content wasn't resonating with people because they saw me, this outsider.

"All of a sudden, you strip away the person from the account, and it becomes something else."

Be relatable

It’s important people feel that you’re accessible for them to buy into your lifestyle.

Mike said: “I know a ton of people who have a ton of followers, but because their content is not relatable they can't get deals.

"Brands are becoming a lot smarter about how they approach people. The audience is getting a lot smarter about it, too.”

Get the right followers

Mike’s NYDoorman Twitter account only has a following of 43.9K and his Instagram is currently followed by 14,000 people - quite a low number compared to other social media stars.

But he is able to up his prices due to the calibre of accounts that follow his accounts, including celebrities and other social media stars.

Mike said: “I understand that 14,000 isn't a ton, but who makes up that 14,000 people is more important.”

So when building your online presence be sure to connect with as many influential people as possible – with higher followings – rather than reaching out to anyone and everyone. Remember it’s quality not quantity.
