AN EXPERIMENT revealed the ideal way to start your day, with the perfect conditions to enjoy your cereal.

The breakfast test conducted by Special K found that eating breakfast from a square bowl increases our perception of nutrition and tastiness.

Apparently we should ditch the coffee first thing and stand up while eating too.

This list of breakfast time best practises was compiled with the help of a neuroscientist and reveals that Brits have been eating their breakfast wrong for years.

Most of us eat cereal from a round bowl, but the research found munching from a square one increases the brain’s perception of nutrition - meaning you'll feel more nourished.

Dr Jennifer Newson, Neuroscience Consultant, PH.D, who oversaw the experiment, explained: "Participants who consumed cereal from a round shaped bowl found it less nutritious than those eating from a square shaped bowl.

“The interviews conducted with the women who took part in the experiment suggest many of us eat with our eyes, because the cereal looked more appetising in a square shaped bowl the women found it more nutritious."

That means that because the cereal looks nicer in a square bowl, it tastes better to us too.

Avoiding drinking with your cereal and eating standing up make your brain feel more positive about your breakfast as well.

She added: "More than ever, people are eating ‘on the go’, and we found that eating standing up actually increased how wholesome people thought the cereal was.

"Based on new evidence it could be argued that when we’re not sitting down at a breakfast table, our brain’s perception of nutrition is higher."

TV personality Katie Piper – who is taking part in a campaign to bust myths and challenge criticism around Special K breakfast cereal – was one of the 78 women who participated in the experiment.

She said: “Whilst I think a lot about what I’m eating for breakfast, I don’t really think about how I eat it.

“Taking part in this experiment made me realise I should take more time to mindfully eat my morning bowl of cereal, so my brain realises I’ve had a nutritious breakfast and I’m ready to tackle the day ahead.”
