If you haven't visited the tiny state of Luxembourg, you might want to consider a two-day visit...

Take a lift

Luxembourg City is built on different levels, so start at the top at le Chemin de la Corniche – a promenade known as Europe’s most beautiful balcony – for a panoramic view of the valley.

Then check out the beautiful stained glass at the , and wander down to the Bock Casemates, part of the world’s longest underground tunnel system, entry £5. At the “grund” level, take the free lift back up to save your legs!

Grab a Luxembourg Card, £11, for inclusive entry to most museums and attractions, as well as public transport.

Have an art attack

Don’t-miss the city’s modern art museum, – Kate Middleton enjoyed time there on a visit to Luxembourg earlier this year.

Housed in a beautiful light and airy building, entry costs £6.

Follow the old ramparts back down to the city, then refuel with a tiramisu hot chocolate, £3.50, at Chocolate House.

Luxembourg is a foodie’s delight.

From the Saturday market at Place Guillaume, with its organic fruit, veg, cheese and jam, to the famous patisserie and chocolate shop, where cakes start from £3.50, you’ll never go hungry.

At lunchtime, head to for the biggest king prawns, £28.50.

For a meaty feast with a cool vibe, you can’t beat , with a glass of local Pinot Noir.

Visit a fairy-tale castle

An hour’s drive north is the town of Clervaux, where the 12th-century castle (destroyed in WW2, but now rebuilt) houses the incredible exhibition, which charts the circle of life in over 500 images of people from all over the world. Entry costs £5.30.

Fill up with cabbage and bacon risotto, £13, at Da Lonati (Da-lonati.com), before visiting nearby medieval and riding the chairlift, £3.50, to the picturesque castle. Entry costs £7.50.

The country is very proud of its Crémant – a buttery sparkling wine – and there are almost as many bars as restaurants in the city.

The cool crowd head for Dipso, while The Tube is fab for craft beers and 25 different gins.

If it’s caffeine you’re after, curl up on the sofas amid the retro art and ornaments at eclectic Kaale Kaffi and grab a slice of home-made cake, £2.75.

The five-star Le Place d’Armes sits in one of Luxembourg City’s bustling squares, and is a mash up of impressive history and quirky modern features.
