Dr Esho, Daniel Granger and Alex Henry reveal the secrets of the E4 show as it returns for a second series
IN a basement studio, in a quiet street in East London, I’m lying flat on my back while a man fires laser beams at my face and there’s a distinct smell of burning.
But it’s no cause for concern – as I’m in the capable hands of Body Fixers’ star Dr Esho, who is promising to take years off me with a laser treatment.
“The smell of burning is not your skin,” he reassures me. “It’s the tiny little hairs on your face.”
The £400 treatment is designed to take off the top layer of skin and increase the collagen in the face, and Dr Esho tells me it’s a popular treatment for celebrities who are about to hit the red carpet.
He said: “This is something that literally anyone can get done in a lunch hour. It plumps the skin, tightens the skin and increases the collagen.
“This is the kind of thing you would have a day or two before any event.”
Despite the smell, the treatment produces no more than a mild tingle in the skin and, after 20 minutes, Dr Esho finishes off the process by putting me in a mask that makes me look something out of I Robot but was actually a Neoelegance LED mask – usually around £200 for a single session.
Unlike most of the customers who wander into the pop up parlour, I had little more than the aging process to worry about.
But Dr Esho revealed the new series of Body Fixers includes more extreme problems – including infected lip fillers.
He said: “We’re getting a lot of people who are regretting what they have done and gone somewhere really cheap.
“There was one girl who went to a lady’s house and got this procedure in the lounge while the dog was wandering round which is not going to be too clinical.
“When she came to us her lips were infected and full of cysts which even affected her ability to drink, so we had to drain the lips before we could fix them."
Other cases are more tragic – including the victim of an acid attack in a nightclub who Dr Esho was able to help in the healing process with the revolutionary blood-spinning treatment known as a “vampire facial.”
There are also celeb clients this year – with reality star Bear opening up about his acne scars and seeking help.
Dr Esho said: “It’s great to help people with scars and flaws that are blighting their lives. It makes a huge difference to them.”
The treatment chair, the hairdresser’s chair and the make up section are all set up next to each other in a surprisingly tiny studio, so I didn’t have far to go for hair guru Daniel Granger – who is next in my makeover line.
For Daniel, series two had had plenty of memorable moments.
He told me: “Every single story this year has an emotional background. We had one girl with alopecia and that was really emotional. We made her a really good wig and she was so overwhelmed.
“There was another girl on the show who hadn’t brushed her hair for years and it was a thick matted mess.
“It had started as a small knot and she was frightened of pulling her hair out and so she stopped brushing and it snowballed from there.
“Deep down she didn’t want to live like that but she was so scared of going anywhere else where they didn’t know what they were doing so it got out of hand. What we did for her will take your breath away.
“There was also a girl who had melted her hair off and she was an extreme character, but we gave her a massive new look and she was really grateful.”
Daniel, whose Northampton business won Salon of the Year last year, asked me a few questions before snipping away at my hair.
As the mirrors in the studio are actually empty frames, to keep the end “reveal” as a surprise, it proved the most unnerving haircut I’d ever had, as I had no idea what he was up to.
“Do you trust me?” he asked, with an engaging grin and I was putty in his hands.
As he snipped he revealed one of the most emotional stories from the series, for the whole team.
He said: “We had one case who was transitioning from male to female and that isn’t something you come across every day in a salon.
“It was great to meet her and hear about the day to day problems she faced, and to be able to help her. She had the nicest hair I have ever had the pleasure to work with. It was beautiful.
“Obviously when she was a man she didn’t use too many products and when she’d grown it out, the hairline was thick but she’d never done anything with it, so that was fantastic.
“Her reaction was really emotional. She loved it.”
Make up artist Alex Henry said he was moved to tears by the same story.
“Most of the transformations have been emotional but the one that really got me and literally had me crying was the transgender makeover.
“It was so amazing watching her grow in confidence through the process. We can do make up and we can do hair and then people go home, but this time I felt like we had changed her life.
“She didn’t know how to do hair and make up because, growing up as a boy, she had never had the chance to do make up with her girlfriends and learn what suited her, so we had to give her that. I think we gave her a real female look and identity.
“I felt like she had seen herself properly for the first time and it all came together and I think that’s what did it. She loved it.”
Alex also revealed that his tutorials carry on long after the cameras stop rolling.
He said: “Sometimes we haven’t got time to teach them everything on camera so we spend some one to one time with them backstage, and that’s when they often come out of the shell.
“We give them a print out of the products , we use before they go so they can get the look.”
He added that it’s not just the subjects of their makeovers that get nervous when the full-length mirror is unveiled for the big reveal.
“We have to show them the results at the end, which is nerve-wracking, and the pressure is on.
“But we haven’t had a bad reaction yet.”
While I was being made up, Alex provided me with tips and advice, including the one make up stage he NEVER skips.
“Always use a primer,” he said. “Skin prep is the most important thing for good make up.”
He also said you are never too old, to too expert, to learn new tricks from others.
He said: “There’s no wrong way of doing make up. Just because I do it one way and you do it another, that doesn’t make you wrong.
“But you can learn from other people’s methods and even I sometimes watch Instagram videos for tips.”
When the job is done , the moment of truth arrives, and as I face the familiar Body Fixers mirror I find I’m as nervous as the show’s real customers.
But, when the mirror is finally revealed I couldn’t be happier – and instantly booked a night out.
If only I could take the talented trio home with me.
