'DAYLIGHT ROBBERY'

Sainsbury’s sparks fury by doubling the price of plastic bags to 20p

SAINSBURY’S has sparked outrage by doubling plastic bag prices to 20p.

Bosses said the move was part of a plan to slash store plastic use by 50 per cent in five years and all profits would go to good causes.

Shoppers moaned on social media, with one saying it was “daylight robbery and completely unacceptable”.

Another tweeted: “Guessing they saw Morrisons get away with it and decided they wanted a bit of that action too!”

And a third reckoned: “I get ‘saving the planet’. So offer a paper bag alternatively at 10p, stop profiteering from my forgetfulness!”

Sainsbury’s and other supermarkets axed single use carrier bags in 2015 after a 5p charge was brought in by the government.

They were then replaced by 5p and 10p plastic bags for life. The 5p ones have been phased out.

Morrisons hiked the price of their plastic bags to 30p in August, while Asda’s went from 9p to 15p in July.

Tesco has so far kept the cost down to 10p.

Sainsbury’s said: “We think 20p is fair. We’re really hoping it will help reduce our plastic usage.”
