JustEat to help thousands of homeless and lonely get free meals this Black Friday

JUST Eat is bucking the trend of Black Friday by donating money to help the homeless and lonely get free food.

For every order made on Black Friday, the food delivery app will donate 50p to the charity FoodCycle.

FoodCycle runs projects across the UK including serving meals from unwanted food which would otherwise gone to waste.

Volunteers take food donated by supermarkets and food outlets and turn them into meals for low-income families, homeless people and those with physical and mental health problems.

Black Friday was one of the busiest days for food deliveries last year, with Just Eat taking 1.5 million orders across the final weekend in November.

Andrew Kenny, UK managing director of Just Eat said: “Just Eat and FoodCycle are firm believers in the power of food in bringing people together, especially at a time of year which can be difficult for those who are lonely or hungry.

“It’s a great feeling to know that the simple act of ordering the food you love - be it a Greggs vegan sausage roll, ramen, burrito or KFC - will go towards helping those in need.”

Mary McGrath, CEO of FoodCycle, added: “It is at this time of year when our guests need their FoodCycle meal most.

“When temperatures plummet, many find themselves making tough choices about whether to keep the heating on or use precious pennies on cooking, whilst many more dread long winter nights spent alone.”

Other companies doing things a little differently this Black Friday include the charity shop chain Refurbs.

Refurbs has issued a plea with customers to “buy nothing new” in a bid to encourage consumers to purchase more second hand goods.
