Greggs’ new ‘vegan steak bake’ spotted on store label – as it’s predicted to launch next week
GREGGS fans may soon have more meat-free options after a label advertising a 'vegan steak bake' was spotted in a Cardiff store.
The picture revealed the pastry treat is set to be made with meat substitute Quorn and has sent Greggs customers into a frenzy.
Since the bakery chain rolled out plant-based sausage rolls in the beginning of this year, it has seen a huge spike in profits.
In August, chief executive Roger Whiteside then revealed it's trying to create vegan options for all of its best-selling pastries.
Last month, Greggs also took to Twitter to ask customers which vegan products they'd like to see next.
The photo of the shelf label shows the steak bake will cost £1.55 to takeaway or £1.85 to eat in store.
It describes the treat, which contains 380 calories, as a "savoury flavour Quorn mycoprotein pieces and diced onions in gravy, wrapped in crisp puff pastry".
First reported by , the shop label was posted by an eagle-eyed customer, Rosie Anne Barnett, in the .
The picture has since spread on social media, and Vegan Food UK's of it has so far racked up almost 4,500 likes.
The account wrote: "CONFIRMED! The first official evidence that @greggs_official will launch a Vegan Steak Bake!
"And many guessed correct that it will be Quorn making the ‘steak’ part of it."
Customers were quick to react to the news, with many praising the move.
One user simply said: "THIS IS GOING TO BE EPIC!!!!!!!"
While another added: "Yessss!!! As a vegan who’s allergic to soy I can’t tell you how happy this makes me."
And a third one wrote: "I am a Greggs employee and we should receive a delivery before 2nd January as they release on either the 2nd or 9th January."
The bakery chain hasn't yet confirmed the new launch to The Sun, but it could be worth keeping your eyes peeled in coming weeks.
