Ikea opens first UK mini-store in Hammersmith shopping centre
IKEA is set to open its first ever high street mini-store in the UK next year.
The Swedish retailer will launch a smaller format branch in Hammersmith, London, in Spring 2021.
Known for its warehouses and cheap large furniture, Ikea says the new smaller store will instead focus on interior design and small home products.
The small branch will have over 2,000 home furnishing items that customers can buy on the day.
On top of this, the entire Ikea catalogue will also be available to order from the store for home delivery.
The new store will be located in Hammersmith Kings Mall, although an exact launch date has yet to be set by Ikea.
There’s also good news for fans of Ikea’s famous meatballs, as there will be a Swedish food space in the mall for hungry shoppers.
Peter Jelkeby, country retail manager and chief sustainability officer at Ikea, said: “Our plan to open a new city centre store in Hammersmith is an exciting next-step, as we continue to respond to people’s evolving shopping habits, making Ikea more convenient than ever before.
“People have been eager to see our affordable range and access our life at home expertise on the high-street for some time.”
The new Hammersmith store isn't the only new-style branch Ikea has launched in the UK in recent years.
The home furniture chain opened two Planning Studios in 2018, one in Tottenham Court Road and the other in Bromley.
While customers can't buy products in store, the Planning Studios act as kitchen and bathroom showrooms to give customers inspiration.
Shoppers can then buy parts for their kitchen and bathroom directly from the store.
Last year, it was revealed how Ikea is to build 160 "flat-pack" homes to help tackle Britain’s housing crisis.
