Nectar is trialling giving shoppers extra points if they spend at Costa, Nando’s and Airbnb

NECTAR is trialling giving shoppers extra bonus points by using their debit or credit cards at firms such as Costa, Nando's and Airbnb.

The so-called "Shopper Rewards" scheme allows users to earn up to 50 points per £1 spent.

First reported by , Nectar has this week emailed a small number of customers telling them they can be part of the trial.

The Sainsbury's-owned loyalty scheme said the trial so far has capacity for 1,000 members only.

And while it's technically only intended for those who received the email, others who've come across it are able to sign up too, the supermarket told The Sun.

It allows users to link credit or debit cards to your Nectar account in order to get specific offers tailored to you.

Here's how to cut the cost of your grocery shop

SAVING on your shop can make a big difference to your wallet. Here are some tips from Hannah Maundrell, editor of Money.co.uk, about how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills:

  • Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
  • Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
  • Never shop hungry – you are far more likely to buy  more food if your tummy is rumbling
  • Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
  • Use social media – follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
  • Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
  • Check the small print –  It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
  • Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards

To earn the bonus points, you simply spend on your bank card as normal and don't need to show your Nectar card at the till.

On the Nectar website, you'll then be able to view how many points you've collected and check how much they're worth.

Examples of offers seen by MoneySavingExpert include 50 points per £1 spent at Costa Coffee, 20 points per £1 spent at Nando's, 20 points per £1 spent with Just Eat and 20 points per £1 spent at Airbnb - although you could only use them once.

The scheme also included offers from Dunelm, Oliver Bonas and Robert Dyas.

When shopping at Sainsbury's, you'll generally earn just one Nectar point for every £1 spent, although some of its partner retailers will offer more.

Points are usually worth half a penny each, which means you'd need 200 to get £1 off the weekly shop.

Nectar is yet to release details of how the trial works, and when it could be rolled out nationally.

As always with any loyalty scheme, make sure you don't use the bonus points as a reason to spend more than planned.
