Lloyds and Halifax apps and internet banking went down as customers struggled to access accounts

THE apps and online banking of Lloyds Bank and Halifax went down today leaving customers without access to their cash.

People complained about receiving error messages when they logged in to their accounts with either of the two banks, which are part of Lloyds Banking Group.

Some couldn't see their balances online while others were unable to make any payments, although the issues are now said to be fixed.

At the height of the issues, the Downdetector website received 1,110 reports from Halifax users and 749 reports from customers with Lloyds Bank.

Among Halifax customers, 73 per cent reported problems with online banking and 21 per cent with mobile banking.

While 59 per cent of Lloyds Bank users complained about internet banking and 33 per cent struggled with mobile banking.

Frustrated customers vented on Twitter with one saying: "@HalifaxBank I just updated your app but now it won’t let me see my account balance."

While another added: "@HalifaxBank Any danger of you sorting your online banking out?

"I’m in a store waiting to pay for something and I feel embarrassed that I cannot pay for something as I do not have access to my savings via online banking!! Unacceptable."

And a Lloyds Bank customer said: "@LloydsBank your website and app having problems?

"I can log on but see no balances at all....when will it be sorted?"

While another asked on Twitter: "is the app not working today? I can't view my account details and my balance is showing zero."

At the time, the  and  service availability pages didn't list any problems.

But a Halifax staff member responded to a customer on Twitter saying: "We know some of you are having issues with viewing your balance online.

"We're sorry for this. We're working to have it back to normal soon."

A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group later told The Sun: "We’re sorry that some of our customers had issues logging into the app earlier today.

"We can confirm this was just for a short period and was resolved quickly."

The online banking of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland crashed on New Year’s Day this year bringing misery to thousands of customers.

Shortly after, Lloyds Banking Group revealed it'll close 56 branches across the UK this year.

Around the same, Halifax and Lloyds Bank also warned customers it will CANCEL credit cards of those in long-term debt.
