Hardware stores are included in the list as they stock essential materials and equipment that help keep homes warm, safe and with power.
We've rounded up the opening hours for the major UK tool stores following the lockdown announcement.
Is B&Q open?
The hardware retailer has reopened all 288 UK stores for customers to browse and shops.
You can find the list of open branches here.
B&Q is still to reopen nine stores in the Republic of Ireland and Guernsey. In total, the DIY chain has 297 shops.
Initially, B&Q offered an online-only service to help protect staff and customers, meaning shoppers could only choose between home delivery and click and collect.
For click and collect options, B&Q opened safe spaces outside closed stores for the public to collect their items.
However, after monitoring other stores' social distancing measures, the hardware chain initially reopened 14 branches on the weekend of April 18/19,
A further 61 branches reopened on April 22, with an additional 80 stores opening on April 23.
The final batch of stores reopened on April 30.
Core opening times are from 8am until 5pm, although times may vary between branches.
B&Q is limiting the number of customers in the stores at any one time, and has installed screens at checkouts and floor markers to help social distancing.
Under 16s are currently not allowed in stores.
Customers visiting the stores will only be able to buy products that are available to take away on the day.
Services such as kitchen and bathroom design, paint mixing, timber cutting and key cutting are not available for the time being.
B&Q will also only be accepting card and contactless payments.
Is Screwfix open?
Screwfix stores are closed for browsing but customers can pick up "essential" click and collect orders.
The company says it will have a designated outside area where customers can collect their items.
Orders will typically be available to collect from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding Wednesdays when stores close an hour earlier at 4pm.
On Sundays, stores are open between 9am and 4pm.
Some stores have reduced their hours even further than this, while some remain temporarily closed.
Check the to see the most up-to-date operating hours.
Screwfix says you should only travel to the store once you've received an SMS saying your order is ready.
Once you are there, you will need to observe social distancing rules.
See this for more information.
Screwfix couldn't tell us what it classes as "essential" items but says its website has been updated to reflect these products as available for click and collect.
Customers can get items delivered to their home, but the retailer has warned delivery times may be delayed due to increased orders.
Currently, Screwfix is charging £5 for next-day delivery on orders under £50.
Anything above this amount qualifies for free delivery.
Is Wickes open?
Wickes has reopened six stores for shoppers to browse.
Stores in Pudsey, Cheltenham, Preston, Sevenoaks, Cricklewood and Hailsham reopened to the public on Thursday, April 30.
The rest of the DIY chain's branches remain open for contactless click and collect orders only.
Click and Collect orders can be placed from 6am to 3pm Monday - Saturday, from a more limited, essentials-only range.
Click and Collect orders cannot currently be placed on Sundays and stores are closed on Sunday for Click and Collect collections.
And Wickes says there may be delays with click and collect orders due to higher than normal demand, and next day collect may not be available.
It says customers must wait until they have confirmation that an order is ready before coming to a store.

Staff can help you carry things and load your car, but you'll be asked to stay two metres away.
Home deliveries are also available, but customers may experience long waits to get on the website, due to increased demand.
Wickes says it is releasing more delivery slots daily so if you can't get a slot you should try again the next day.
It no longer has availability for Next Day delivery on most lines and locations.
Shoppers can use the to find out more information about their nearest Wickes.

Is Homebase open?
Homebase reopened all 164 UK stores on May 2.
It won’t, however, be offering some services, such as kitchen design appointments, key cutting or some concessions, including Bathstore and Rug Doctor carpet cleaners, which you can normally hire for 48 hours.
For online orders, the DIY retailer says that there is currently huge demand, which means it’s taking longer than usual to deliver.
All items will be delivered in line with social distancing guidelines, following a contact-free process.
Larger items will either be delivered to the first accessible room in your home, or to an agreed contact-free drop off point.
The reserve and collect service has been temporarily suspended.
Homebase hasn't said when it expects to bring this option back.
Its home design consultations are also temporarily unavailable.
You can have a phone consultation instead, although customer services lines are currently down.
Customers can use Homebase's to see where their nearest branch is and check its contact details.
