Morrisons adds 100,000 boxes of essentials a week to help households get supplies delivered

MORRISONS is increasing the number of food boxes it delivers to vulnerable and self-isolating people from 10,000 to 100,000 people a week.

The supermarket chain is also introducing two new boxes - Morrisons Market Kitchen Meal Box and the Morrisons British ‘Meat’ Box.

The kitchen meal box costs £30 including delivery and comes with eight ready meals, including shepherd's pie and chicken and tomato pasta bake.

Customers can also choose to add their own sides to dishes like chicken tikka masala or Kerala vegetable curry.

The meat box is filled with enough meat for more than 38 meals and costs £45 including delivery, featuring items like a gammon joint, a beef roasting joint and a pack of chicken fillets.

Customers should compare prices to individual items on sale as the boxes might not be good value, but people may wish to pay more right now for convenience.

The chain already sells two types of grocery boxes costing £35 each, which were launched a couple of weeks ago.

The content of the boxes, available in , vary depending on what's available.

But Morrisons said a typical box for a meat eater may include everything from canned baked beans to meat and vegetables.

The and quickly sell out, but Morrisons said new slots are being made available everyday.

As a result of the high demand, the supermarket chain is aiming to increase the number of boxes it produces to 200,000 a week over the coming weeks.

You can select a delivery date that suits you - Morrisons says it can deliver the next day if you order before 3pm, but at the moment be aware that delivery times could vary.

Morrisons has also started delivering them to local hospitals, care homes and sheltered accommodation for NHS and care workers.

If you're unable to get one, Hello Fresh and Gousto do recipe boxes but they're both struggling due to high demand following the coronavirus outbreak.

Chicken & Tomato Pasta Bake

The box contains a 5.7kg selection of fresh meat and includes:

A gammon joint

A beef roasting joint

A pack of chicken fillets

Four  beef burgers

25 meatballs

10 sausages

A pack of beef mince

A pack of pork loin steaks

Two sirloin steaks

A sachet of fresh peppercorn sauce.

 

Stores including Iceland and Tesco are also running dedicated opening hours for NHS staff so they can access food and essentials during the coronavirus epidemic.

It comes after one nurse made a tearful plea to fellow shoppers to stop stockpiling food and essentials after ending her shift and finding supermarket shelves empty.

Stores have been placed under extreme demand during the coronavirus outbreak as customers empty them of items including cleaning products, pasta and toilet roll.

As a result, some supermarkets are now limiting the number of products shoppers can buy to try and make sure everyone has access.
