Supermarkets slash the price of Easter eggs and chocolate

Heavily discounted Easter eggs have been seen at most of the major supermarkets and online prices have also been cut.

On the Sainsbury's website, for example, the cost of a Lindt Gold Bunny Egg was down to £4, from £6 - a 33% saving, a Malteasers Buttons Extra Large egg was down to £4, from £8 - a 50 per cent saving, while a Lindt Lindor milk egg was down to £4, from £6.

There were similar discounts at all the other major supermarkets.

On Asda's website we saw that large Cadbury Creme, Malteaser, and Cadbury Twirl eggs were in a three for £8 deal. It has also knocked down a large selection of 130g eggs to 75p.

The coronavirus pandemic has significantly changed the way we shop and sales for Easter confectionery are likely to be down on a normal year.

Last year, for example, shoppers went on an £11billion spending spree over the Easter weekend.

The discounts seen at the shops come as huge queues were seen at supermarkets across the UK yesterday as people tried to stock up on food before Easter Sunday.

In the week shoppers were told to expect queues this weekend ahead of larger shops closing on Easter Sunday.

Opening hours have also changed this weekend because of the bank holidays. We have a full list of all the supermarket opening hours for this weekend.

Many supermarkets now have restrictions on the number of people who enter stores in order to maintain social distancing to help stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

The number of items you can buy has also been restricted at most supermarkets, although some have lifted this on seasonal chocolate including Easter eggs.

While it may be tempting to stock up on cheap chocolate, trips to the supermarket should also only be to buy basic foods and essentials.

On March 23 Boris Johnson told all non-essential shops to shut, but supermarkets were allowed to remain open so people can buy basic food and essential items.

But there are some other options for getting hold of Easter chocolate. Deliveroo and Amazon, for example, were offering delivery services this week.

Local corner shops have been using Deliveroo to sell their products while people with Amazon Prime may be able to get chocolate delivered in time.

Aldi is set to lift restrictions on the number of items shoppers can buy on Monday.

Morrisons shopping is now available to order with the Deliveroo app.

While Asda has launched a free prescription delivery service.
