Under the new lockdown lifting measures, garden centres are now also back in business.
But in the three-step roadmap to recovery, unveiled by Boris Johnson on Sunday, non-essential businesses won't reopen until July 4 at the earliest.
The closures aim to help slow the spread of coronavirus and relieve pressure on the NHS.
But many essential shops also ended up closing over fears that they would be putting staff and customers at risk.
Now, some of these chains are beginning to reopen stores - although it's not business as usual.
Here are all of the shops that have reopened stores and/or websites during lockdown and what measures they've put in place to keep shoppers and staff safe.
Retailers
B&Q
B&Q has now reopened all 288 of its UK stores.
The hardware chain initially reopened 14 branches in mid-April after watching “other essential retailers support social distancing measures”.

Since then, it's been gradually opening more stores as it said it became clear staff could serve customers safely following social distancing measures.
The DIY chain is considered to be "essential" meaning it is allowed to stay open during the lockdown.
You can find the full list of reopened stores here.
Dunelm
Furniture retailer Dunelm shut its doors and website last month after the government lockdown, but it opened its online operations a few weeks later.
Dunelm says deliveries may be delayed, but it'll let you know on individual product pages and in your shopping basket if so.
The retailer offers free delivery on orders over £20.
If your total order amount is less, you'll have to pay from £3.95 for the trouble.
The retailer has also introduced a new contactless click and collect service across all of its 172 UK stores.
Plus it's reopened seven stores in the Midlands for browsing - these are located in Thurmaston, Lincoln, Boston, Derby, Chesterfield, Nottingham and Mansfield.
Homebase
Homebase initially opened 70 UK stores as part of a trial, and then opened the remainder of its stores on May 2.
The home improvement retailer is considered to be essential so is allowed to stay open during lockdown, but it temporarily closed all stores as it struggled to comply with social distancing rules.
While its stores remained closed for browsing, it operated a click and collect service but customers struggled to get onto its website due to high demand.
On the first weekend it reopened, hundreds of shoppers were spotted venturing out during lockdown to queue to get in but they appeared to be abiding by rules - keeping at least two metres apart.
Ikea
Ikea is reportedly planning to reopen its UK stores on May 18 - with strict social distancing measures in place.
The Swedish furniture giant temporarily shut its 22 stores on March 20 - a day before Britain went into lockdown.
But The Daily Mail suggested the retailer was working out how it could reopen when the lockdown is eased, and has pencilled in mid-May as a target date.
Next
Next reopened its website on April 22 after two weeks of being offline over coronavirus fears, but it's only doing limited orders.
It was one of the few retailers to temporarily stop online trading as well as close its stores, largely due to the shutdown of its warehouses and distribution centres over staff safety concerns.
But following a consultation with workers, a string of new safety measures have been put in place including one-way systems and new walkways at its warehouses.
Next has also set limits on the number of items that can be ordered in a day so staff can work safely to fulfil them.
But its maximum order capacity was reached within an hour of it reopening on the first day.
If you're desperate to make a Next order, make sure you do so early in the day to avoid missing out.
Its stores remain closed as they are not considered to be essential.
However, the retailer began to outline plans to reopen when the lockdown is eased.
It said it would prioritise larger, out-of-town stores, where social distancing can be more easily implemented because these shops tend to have more room to queue outside and are open for longer.
Other safety measures it is likely to add include perspex screens to separate workers and customers at the tills, distance markings on the floor and hand sanitiser stations.
Shops allowed to stay open
ONLY a small group of retailers will be allowed to stay open, they include:
- Supermarkets
- Pharmacies
- Takeaways and food deliveries
- Health shops
- Medical services – eg, dentists
- Vets
- Newsagents

- Food banks and shelters
Poundland
Poundland has announced it'll reopen 30 of its stores across the UK and Ireland from next week.
The discount retailer had kept most of its shops open for essential shopping, but in March it temporarily shut around 100 branches.
The majority of the closed stores had another outlet close by or were in a shopping centre which faced difficulties remaining open.
The 30 stores will reopen with social distancing measures including security guards at the door to limit the number of customers in store at any one time and floor markers to help customers keep two metres apart.
Other measures in place include perspex screens to protect workers and customers and "rigorous hygiene routines", which include workers washing their hands every 20 minutes and surfaces being wiped down every hour.
Quiz
Fashion retailer Quiz closed its website on March 27 due to staff concerns, but then reopened it on April 14.
While its stores remain closed, you'll be able to place orders online and get standard delivery.
This costs £3.99, and usually takes between two and five working days in normal circumstances.
Quiz has temporarily axed its next day delivery option in order to help keep staff safe.
River Island
Fashion retailer River Island reopened its online store in April after implementing new safety measures for staff in its warehouse.
It stressed that it's not back to "business as usual" yet, although it's accepting new orders again.
River Island said it expects some delay in the usual delivery times, but explained all new orders should be processed within 14 days.
If you made an order while the warehouse was closed, River Island said it'll now process it as a priority.
The retailer offers free standard UK delivery, which in normal circumstances would take between three to four days to arrive.
Its stores remain closed.
Timpsons
The shoe repairer, dry cleaning and locksmith chain has announced that it is slowly starting to reopen some of its stores.
While its locksmiths have remained open during the lockdown, it's now planning on opening stores that are located inside supermarkets after receiving the go-ahead by the Government.
Perspex screens have been put up in these stores and strict hygiene routines will be implemented to keep staff and customers safe during this time.
The shops will gradually be reopening in the near future - you can find out which ones are open .
Timpsons has topped up furloughed staff salaries by 20 per cent while the stores have been closed down, and will continue to do so for those who aren't able to return to work yet.
TK Maxx
Fashion and homeware retailer TK Maxx reopened its website in April to accept orders and deliveries.
The retailer had paused orders from its website in March as it tried to keep staff safe during the coronavirus crisis.
It will only accept orders between 9am and 11am and it has also placed a limit on how many orders it can take each day.
“If we reach this daily limit, our customers will still be able to browse, but won’t be able to add to basket or place any orders,” it said on its website.
“We’ll be ready to take orders again the next day, so do come back and visit us.”
All 349 UK stores remain closed and the click and collect service is still unavailable.
Wickes
The hardware store reopened six branches with strict social distancing measures in place at the end of April, a month after all 230 shops were closed at the start of the lockdown.
These shops are located in in Pudsey, Cheltenham, Preston, Sevenoaks, Cricklewood and Hailsham.
As of today, Wickes is also reopening another 105 branches across the UK.
And from May 19, it'll open the doors to another 108 shops.
Wickes is considered essential so it can continue to stay open to serve customers.
Social distancing measures in stores include limiting the number of people in its shops at any one time.
There will also be clear signage and floor markers to ensure people remain two metres apart and perspex screens have been installed at the tills.
Sanitising stations will be made available for customer use, staff will be using PPE and the shops will only accept card and contactless payments.
The stores will operate shorter opening hours on Monday to Saturday, opening at either 7am or 8am and closing at 4pm or 5pm.
While Sunday trading hours remain the same at 10am to 4pm.
Its website remains open for sales, with click and collect and home delivery still running.
Fast food restaurants
Burger King
Burger King is currently carrying out a phased reopening of the majority of restaurants for delivery and drive-thru orders.
It's pledged to reopen one in every city by May 31 - you can see the full list of those that are already up and running here.
In total, Burger King has reopened around 50 restaurants in the UK - but only for delivery and drive-thru.
A further 72 will start serving up food again from Monday, May 18.
Cafe and restaurants are allowed to continue to offer a takeaway service during lockdown, but Burger King initially closed all branches to keep staff and customers safe.
Having given staff training on how to run a kitchen with social distancing rules, it started by opening four stores last month but has already expanded this.
The restaurants are offering a limited menu, although classics such as Whoppers and Chicken Royales are available, and customers can order their food through Just Eat or Deliveroo.
It means that only those who live within a certain area of the open branches will be able to order.
You might want to keep in mind that Deliveroo has a minimum spend of £5 for Burger King orders, plus a £2.95 delivery charge.
Just Eat charges a delivery fee of £2.50.
Costa Coffee
Caffeine addicts will be pleased to know Costa Coffee has already reopened some of its stores.
It initially reopened four branches for drive-thru and delivery orders, and then opened another 29 stores for delivery and drive-through last Saturday.
Click here to see where Costa has reopened - although keep in mind customers won't be able to eat inside these stores.
As well as hot drinks, Costa is also serving cakes and hot food, including toasties and sandwiches.
It's teamed up with Uber Eats for deliveries and there is no minimum delivery spend - but you'll need to pay a delivery fee of £3.50 per order.
Costa announced it was temporarily closing the majority of its 2,700 stores on March 23, keeping just a handful of branches inside hospitals open for NHS staff.
Five Guys
Five Guys has reopened 47 of its 104 restaurants for click and collect and delivery orders only, along with a full menu.
See the full list of reopened Five Guys branches here.
Customers can order food via the Five Guys website and arrange to collect it themselves - there's no minimum spend or extra charge to do this.
If you're unable to leave the house, it's teamed up with Deliveroo but you'll need to factor in the £5 minimum spend and £2.99 delivery charge when placing your order.
Greggs
Greggs is trialling reopening some of its stores for walk-in customers in the Newcastle area to test social distancing measures.
It had previously looked at officially reopening the 20 shops in Newcastle - where Greggs headquarters is based - but scrapped these plans over fears of huge customer demand.
When asked by The Sun where the trial locations are and how many branches had opened, Greggs declined to say.
KFC
KFC fans can once again get their hands on their favourite fried chicken after the fast food chain reopened around 100 branches for delivery only - you can find out which ones here.
You won't be able to order directly from the restaurant - you'll need to go through a third party delivery service.
Orders placed through Deliveroo will see a £3.49 delivery charge added to the bill, while Just East charges £3 and Uber Eats charges £3.50.
Last week, it also opened 55 drive-thrus, open from midday to 9pm, seven days a week.
However, KFC is urging customers to continue to order online still if they can.
KFC is running a limited menu to help keep workers safe, but when we checked, you can still order single sandwiches, smaller meal boxes and larger bucket options.
KFC has 900 outlets in the UK, with the chicken chain having temporarily shut up shop on March 23.
McDonald's
The fast food chain reopened 15 of its branches yesterday, May 13, offering takeaway and delivery.
It was swamped with orders in the first day, with delivery drivers seen queuing outside closed branches.
McDonald's is also planning to reopen 40 drive-thrus next Wednesday across the nation, with all 900 open by early June.
It was announced after environment secretary George Eustice hinted McDonald's could open all of its drive-thru restaurants.
He said: "A McDonald’s drive-through is made for the social distancing situation that we are in.”
M&S Cafe
Marks & Spencer reopened 49 of its in-store cafes for takeaway hot drinks today, May 14.
The roll-out follows a successful trial at five of the in-store cafes.
These are located in High Street Kensington, Maybrook Canterbury, Pantheon, Victoria Cardinal Place and Waterside.
The 49 cafes, which are located in M&S stores across the UK, have been selected as they're next to a foodhall.
This means customers can easily pick up a coffee while doing their food shop.
Most of the cafes are open for the first six hours of trade at each store, meaning if the shop opens at 9am the cafe will be open until 3pm.
Nando's
Nando's has reopened six restaurants in London and Manchester for delivery orders only.
The chicken chain temporarily shut all 340 restaurants on March 23 because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Customers who want to get their Peri Peri fix will need to order from Nando's via Deliveroo.
Nando's has also confirmed it'll be running a reduced menu, although it said the majority of fan favourites will still be ready to order.
When The Sun checked, Nando's was serving Peri Peri chicken wings, halloumi and Peri Peri chips.
The reopened restaurants include four in London and two in Manchester, with core opening hours of 12pm to 9pm.
Pret a Manger
Pret a Manger has now reopened 101 branches for takeaway and delivery.
It initially opened ten branches close to hospitals to help serve frontline healthcare workers, which were only open for delivery orders placed through Just Eat, Deliveroo or Uber Eats.
But then it opened 20 more branches, and rolled out takeaway services too.
And as of May 11, another 71 branches in London, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford, Reading, St Albans and Tunbridge Wells have reopened too.
If you do want your Pret goodies delivered, you'll need to factor in the delivery charges, for example, Deliveroo charges £3.49, Just Eat is £3 and Uber Eats charges £3.50.
Only a limited menu is available including the most popular sandwiches, salads and baguettes.
Pret a Manger has around 500 cafes in the UK, all of which shut on March 21.
Shake Shack
Burger chain Shake Shack reopened two of its London restaurants for takeaway and delivery last month.
The Tottenham Court Road branch opened on Tuesday April 28, and the one in Canary Wharf opens on Thursday April 30.
Customers will be able to place takeaway orders in the restaurants themselves, or order food for home delivery through Deliveroo.
The company, which is known for its burgers, crinkly fries and milkshakes, said it has introduced social distancing measures designed to keep staff and customers safe.
These include face masks for all employees, floor markers, contactless pick-up and delivery, and allocated pick-up zones for delivery riders.
The opening hours for the Tottenham Court Road and Canary Wharf restaurants will be 11.30am to 10pm.
Shake Shack is also offering delivery to SW11 postcodes in London from a Deliveroo kitchen in Battersea.
The kitchen will be open for delivery only from 11am to 10:45pm, seven days a week.

Starbucks
Starbucks has reopened 150 of its UK stores from today - but only for drive-thru and takeaway orders.
The cafe chain made the call to kick-start business again after Prime Minister Boris Johnson laid out the "first careful steps" of easing the coronavirus lockdown.
It hasn't revealed exactly which stores have been reopened but customers are advised to check the to see if their local branch is open.
Branches have been closed since March 23, even though cafes and restaurants were allowed to continue to offer a takeaway service.
Starbucks says it'll be serving a "near-complete" range of beverages including lattes, cappuccinos, iced coffees, teas and frappuccinos.
But food will be more restricted, with the coffee giant offering a menu "focused on our most popular items".
Customers will be able to use drive-thru lanes to order drinks and food, or through the Starbucks app.
Alternatively, customers can order by calling their local store or through Uber Eats.
Subway
Subway reopened more than 600 - around a quarter - of its branches for takeaway and delivery across the UK on Tuesday, May 12.
It came after the sandwich chain closed all shops on March 23 due to coronavirus.
Stores feature signage to support social distancing, improved hygiene practices and the supply of PPE to protect staff and customers.
The new measures have been tested in a small number of stores that have remained open to serve key workers and hospital staff, Subway said.
To say thanks for their hard work during the pandemic, NHS workers will receive 25 per cent off their orders.

Hungry Subway fans can also order for delivery on Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats from the reopened branches.
