Today's boost to shops comes after our Bounce Back Britain campaign to help people, communities and businesses get back on their feet.
When re-opening was announced, there were fears only one in ten would lift their shutters.
But fast action by store bosses to implement safety measures and staff eager to get back to work mean it will be far higher.
Stores such as River Island, John Lewis, M&S and Lakeland will have deals — but there is unlikely to be widespread discounting.
Bounce Back Britain
IT’S high time Britain bounced back from lockdown — and The Sun aims to help you lead the way.
With shops reopening, sport relaunching and families joyfully reuniting this week, our major new Bounce Back Britain campaign intends to put people, communities and businesses back on their feet.
Check out how we're doing it here.
The Sun contacted all the major shopping brands and found 3,112 stores out of 5,182 will reopen today.
Primark will have all 153 stores open. Next will have 128 of its 500 stores open — with the rest in coming weeks.
Shops are desperate for a boost, with lockdown costing them £1.8billion a week, says the British Retail Consortium. And it is a boost for the economy, which shrank by a fifth in April.
Shops opening today will have hand sanitiser at the doors, markings on the floor to guide shoppers around one-way systems and plastic screens at the tills.
Primark said every second till will be closed, while Currys PC World is upping cleaning efforts – sanitising trollies, baskets, demo products and more to keep you safe.
