Map shows where public toilets are open near you

FINDING a loo during lockdown is tricky – but a new map will help you locate your nearest public toilet.

The Lockdown Loo website launched last week reveals the location of open public toilets as well as loos in pubs, restaurants and stations which can be used across the UK.

It follows large crowds of boozers in London Fields who have been pooing and weeing on doorsteps near the park, as lockdown restrictions allow groups of six to meet outside.

Public toilets are allowed to stay open but must follow covid-secure rules, but a large number have closed or have reduced opening hours.

The new website was started by brothers Tom and Charles Riley, 25 and 22, who live in Hammersmith.

Tom said: “We went for a drink taking advantage of being able to go outside and then spent 30 minutes legging it across Hammersmith to use a toilet.

“We just thought it was impractical and all the other toilet maps out there are out of date.”

The map now lists 1,200 loos across the UK. Tom estimates that they will hit 2,000 by the end of today and over 3,000 by July 4.

He added: “The response has been amazing. We didn’t realise how useful it would be to women, mothers and those with disabilities or who are bit older. We’ve been overwhelmed.”

Tom usually works as a civil servant but has taken holiday to launch the site, while brother Charles works for ride-hailing app Bolt.

Users can submit new loo-cations using the form on the website. The pair are regularly updating the site and vetting loo locations where possible.

“We did start off in London but now we are nationwide and increasingly tracking beauty spots where people want to go, from Cornish beaches to Scarborough to the top of Scotland,” Tom added.
