5 changes for McDonald’s including new 10pm curfew rule explained
MCDONALD’S restaurants are open for business but customers will need to follow coronavirus safety rules.
The government has imposed tougher restrictions for hospitality and leisure businesses, including a 10pm curfew for restaurants and pubs.

You can still order from McDonald's after 10pm but only via home delivery or through its drive-thrus - we explain below.
The latest coronavirus rules come on top of safety measures already installed by the fast food company, including perspex screens at order points, hand sanitiser stations and fewer tables.
McDonald's has reopened the majority of its restaurants for dine-in, drive-thru, click and collect, and delivery.
Not all branches will offer each of these options though - use the to see what your nearest restaurant is doing.

McDonald's shut all of its 1,350 restaurants across the UK in March amid the coronavirus lockdown.
It first started reopening for home delivery orders on May 13, followed by dine-in customers on July 22.
No dine-in orders after 10pm
McDonald's customers won't be able to eat in beyond 10pm due to the latest coronavirus restrictions.
It means last orders for dine-in must be placed by 9.30pm, the fast food chain has confirmed.
The same applies for click and collect orders, as customers can't enter restaurants to pick up food beyond 10pm.
When eating in, customers can order via the tills or self-service screens as normal, or they can order direct from their table by the .
The app, which is free to download, allows customers to enter their table number so staff know who to bring their food to.
Drive-thru or delivery after 10pm
McDonald's has confirmed around 800 of its restaurants will remain open for drive-thru and delivery after the new 10pm coronavirus curfew.
Home delivery from McDonald's is available via Uber Eats or Just Eat, depending on your location.
But keep in mind you'll pay a delivery fee when you use either service, which varies based on how far away from the restaurant you are.
It doesn't cost extra to use the drive-thru lanes.
A handful of restaurants are also trialling click and collect orders to your car.
But unlike going through an actual drive-thru lane, this isn't available after 10pm.
Customers must leave contact details
It's now mandatory for customers to leave their contact details when dining in at McDonald's - it was optional before.
All hospitality businesses are being asked to collect addresses and numbers to help the NHS test and trace service.
Customers can either:
- Check in with the . The NHS app only applies to England and Wales.
- Fill in their details via a new web form McDonald's has set up. The McDonald’s web form works for the whole of the UK.
- Or manually leave their details. This applies to the all McDonald's in the UK.
Customers with the NHS app can check in by scanning a QR code inside restaurants. This will then alert them in an outbreak occurs in their area.
Or if they've left their details, staff will be required to keep these for 21 days and provide data to the NHS if asked.
A McDonald’s Spokesperson said: "We have three ways in which customers can record their visit.
"Wherever possible, we are encouraging customers to use the NHS Test and Trace App, displaying QR codes in every restaurant window.
"For those without the app, and for customers in Scotland and Northern Ireland, we have a web form to enable customers to share their details.
"For customers without a smart phone, our employees can manually collect contact information."
Full list of places where you need to wear a face mask
BRITS are required by law to wear a mask in the following places:
- Shops
- Supermarkets
- Shopping centres
- Transport hubs - Train stations and terminals, airports, ports, bus and coach stations and terminals
- Cafes and when buying takeaway food
- Banks and building societies
- Post Offices
- Cinemas
- Places of worship
- Museums
- Art galleries
Customers in pubs and restaurants will have to cover up from September 24 but can take them off to eat or drink.
People caught not wearing a mask in shops could be fined £200.
Enforcement will be carried out by police and not retail staff.
Who doesn't have to wear a face covering?
- Children under the age of 11
- People who cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability
- If you are speaking to or providing assistance to someone who relies on lip reading, clear sound or facial expressions to communicate
- Police officers and other emergency workers
You also don't need to wear a face covering if:
- Where putting on, wearing or removing a face covering will cause you severe distress
- If not wearing one would avoid harm or injury, or the risk of harm or injury, to yourself or others
Staff must wear face masks
McDonald's staff must wear face masks when on shift, unless they're exempt because of health reasons.
Previously, it wasn't compulsory for workers to wear a face covering.
For diners, you must wear a mask at all times when moving around the restaurant - again, unless you're exempt.
This includes when ordering your food at the tills or self-service screens or going to the toilet.
You can remove your mask when you're seated, or when you're eating or drinking.
Customers must be seated when eating
When eating or drinking in at McDonald’s, you must be seated at all times.
You won't be allowed to eat or drink while standing up at any branches, inside or outside.
This means even if you're taking your food away, you can't start consuming it until you've left the restaurant.
The new rules say: "Customers must eat and drink at a table in any premises selling food and drink to consume indoors, on site (from 24 September)."
