NAUGHTY OR NICE

Tesco’s cheeky Christmas ad 2020 says none of us are on the naughty list this year

TESCO has cheekily joked that none of us are on Santa’s naughty list this year in its Christmas advert for 2020.

The new clip centres around people confessing to bad behaviour, including giving dodgy haircuts and buying too much toilet roll during lockdown.

The advert starts by showing a little girl who gave her sister a bad haircut

But Tesco tells them all is forgiven as 2020 has been a difficult year following the coronavirus crisis.

The one-minute advert - which is set to Britney Spears' iconic song "Oops!... I Did It Again" - starts by showing a girl who wants to buy a cake from Tesco, but feels she can’t after she gave her sister a bad haircut.

She asks: “What if I’m on the naughty list?”

But the narrator replies: “Relax, after this year Tesco says there is no naughty list - so take that cake. You deserve it.”

The next scene shows a man who bought too much toilet paper, with a snowman made up of bog roll in his front garden.

Other bad behaviour that’s overlooked is someone who forgot to sing Happy Birthday while washing his hands, in a reference to how long you should wash your hands for.

A mother also confesses to not teaching her kids physics or maths while homeschooling.

The Tesco narrator then pipes in by saying: “Guys, it’s fine - there is no naughty list, so tuck in.”

Tesco will debut its new advert on TV tonight during The Voice on ITV, which starts at 8.40pm.

Alessandra Bellini, chief customer officer at Tesco, siad: “We know that the festive ads mark the start of the season for a lot of people – 27% of the nation in fact - and that this year, customers were looking for something fun and uplifting.

“When we talked to friends, colleagues and customers about the concept, everyone instantly confessed to the naughty things they’ve done during 2020 with a wry smile.

“It’s really relatable and we hope it resonates with people and gets them talking.”

In 2019, Tesco's Christmas advert featured supermarket staff delivering food to Winston Churcill and office raves.

And in 2018, the supermarket celebrated all the different ways families celebrate including whether Brussels sprouts belong on your plate.
