Morrisons unveils new food box which feeds family of four for £30

MORRISONS is selling a new food box which feeds a family of four for £30.

Each box contains a mixture of fresh and dry ingredients, which the supermarket says will make five meals for £1.50 a portion.

However, you may be able to save cash depending on how you shop and by buying the items - or their nearest equivalent - individually.

For example, we worked out the value of the box is actually £27.33 if you take into account you only get one garlic and 5g of chilli powder.

Morrisons only lists packs of four garlic on its website for 62p, which works out at 16p each, while its own-brand chilli powder costs 95p for 47g, which would be 10p for the 5g you get in the box.

Morrisons doesn't list Eat Fresh chilli powder on its website.

If you take into account the full price of the four garlics and 47g pot of chilli powder, the value of the box would be £28.64.

However, it's worth noting that the £30 cost of the box does include delivery - so it could still be good value for customers who can't go to the supermarket.

Morrisons' Family of Four Everyday box ingredients

HERE'S what you get in the Morrisons Family of Four Everyday food box:

The price for the food box is £30 - but it is possible to save money by buying each ingredient individually.

We worked out everything in the box is worth around £27.33, so you're paying £2.67 for the luxury of having everything sent to you.

We calculated this based on the single price of a garlic - Morrisons only sells packs of four online for 62p which is 16p each - and 5g of chilli powder based on the cheapest own-brand from Morrisons.

Morrisons sells 47g of chilli powder for 95p, which works out at 10p for 5g. The supermarket doesn't sell Eat Fresh chilli powder online.

If you take into account the full price of the four-pack of garlic and 47g of chilli powder, the value of the box is £28.64.

However, the £30 cost of the box also covers delivery to your door.

We've asked the supermarket how often the boxes are sent out as part of the subscription, and if you can cancel without cost, and we'll update this article when we know more.

The food boxes are available online only, so you won't find them in stores.

As well as coming with ingredients, Morrisons has also included recipes to make the five meals.

The meals you can make from the content of the box include spaghetti and meatballs, chilli con carne, veggie curry, cheesy leek and mushroom pie and sausage and butterbean bake.

On their website, Morrisons promises to take away time consuming "planning and hassle" from family meals with these new options.

Each portion is less than half the price of market leaders.

Hello Fresh meals start at £3.25 per person and Gousto starts at £2.98 per serving.

Meanwhile, Mindful Chef is priced at £6 per portion.

Customers might even have some ingredients left to cook additional meals because of the full-size produce they include.

This comes as families voice their outrage after being handed “offensively meagre” food boxes by the government, which were suppose to be worth £30 in place of free school meals.

You can also get selections of fruit from £16, alcohol boxes, and an "ultimate cleaning bundle" priced at £35.

And for all of the Brits who are attempting to cut out meat in 2021, there is also a Veganuary option at £25 a box.

Tessa Callaghan, head of food boxes at Morrisons, said: "Many of our customers enjoy eating meals as a family and we have seen customers do this more during the pandemic.
