Entry-level pay will rise from £9.50 to £10.10 an hour outside of London, and £10.85 to £11.35 within the M25.

Depending on how long workers have been at Lidl, those outside the capital could earn up to £11.40 an hour, and £12.25 if they work in it.

It means that Lidl workers will get 60p more an hour than the National Living Wage.

The National Living Wage, for people aged 25 and over, is £8.91 - but will increase to £9.50 in April 2022.

Lidl also said that the boost will make it the highest paying grocer in the UK.

It said that the boost will mean a pay rise for 21,000 workers - around 80% of the supermarket's workforce.

The boost to pay packets will roll out in March 2022.

Lidl GB chief executive officer Christian Härtnagel said: "At Lidl, our frontline colleagues are the backbone of our business.

"They have worked tirelessly over the past 18 months of the Covid-19 crisis and are integral to our future success.

"We have ambitious plans to grow our business across Great Britain, and to do that we need to ensure we attract and look after the best talent at every level of our business. "

Lidl claims it has overtaken Morrisons as the highest paying grocer - following a pay increase in January this year, Morrisons staff saw wages rise to at least £10.

It saw 96,000 workers receive a pay rise of up to 9%.
