URGENT RECALL

Baby milk formula sold in high street chemists urgently recalled over salmonella fears

PARENTS have been warned not to feed their babies certain infant formulas over fears they are contaminated with salmonella.

Manufacturer Abbott has issued an urgent recall for the products which could cause serious illness and are being investigated in relation to the death of a baby in the US.

Various batches of Elecare Similac and Alimentum Similac infant formula powder are impacted, and are also being tested for Cronobacter sakazakii.

Both products are used for special medical purposes for babies, such as a cows milk allergy, and are usually only available with a prescription.

Salmonella can cause serious food poisoning, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and a fever.

A Coronobacter infection can also cause illness.

The products have already been recalled in the US, although Abbott says no distributed batches have tested positive for the bacteria.

Now the UK's Food Standards Agency has published an urgent recall notice.

An Abbott spokeswoman said: "We value the trust parents place in us for high quality and safe nutrition and we’ll do whatever it takes to keep that trust and resolve this situation.

"At Abbott, our first priority is the health and safety of our customers. The voluntary recall only impacts Alimentum and EleCare in the UK.
