Salmonella can cause serious food poisoning in humans.

Symptoms caused by the bug include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and tummy cramps.

There is risk to humans the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said in the recall alert.

This comes either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.

The bug can also affect animals, causing symptoms that include diarrhoea, but they may not show any signs of illness.

Three flavours of raw dog food made by Dogs Choice UK are subject to the recall.

You can return the item to the shop where you bought it and get a full refund.

Locations selling the food will have notices as tills about the recall too.

The items affected all have a best before date of August 8, 2022 and come in 500g sizes.

  • Frozen Chicken and Beef 500g, batch code 080222+2, best before August 8, 2022
  • Frozen Chicken and Beef Ready Meal 500g, batch code 080222+2, best before August 8, 2022
  • Frozen Chicken Liver 500g, 080222+2, best before August 8, 2022

The FSA is also advising pet owners about how to handle raw pet food safely.

You should always clean utensils and food bowls after use, and wash your hands after touching any of these and the food itself, cleaning any surfaces too.

The FSA says raw pet food should be stored separately from any food and especially foods which are ready to eat.

Care should also be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces, it said.

Last year cat food sold at Sainsbury’s and Pets at Home was recalled over fears it could cause serious illness.

One woman was left devastated after her family pet died from a fatal illness linked to the recalled food.

Meanwhile parents have been warned not to feed their babies certain infant formulas over fears they are contaminated with salmonella.
