THE countdown to Easter may be underway but one Greggs fan favourite will be missing from the menu.

The build up to Easter on April 17 started this week with the start of Lent yesterday.

Christians traditionally give up something such as chocolate or sugar for the period until Easter.

They can then look forward to tucking into typical treats.

Beyond chocolate eggs, hot cross buns are a key feature of the Easter period.

The sweet treat has featured on the Greggs menu during the festival season in the past.

Greggs is yet to reveal its full menu for 2022 but has confirmed that its stores won't be cooking up any hot cross buns.

A spokesperson said: Our Hot Cross Buns are taking a well-deserved rest from our Easter menu this year but keep an eye out for our other exciting Easter products which will be in shops soon”.

However, another fan favourite has returned to Greggs stores today.

Its Vegan Sausage, Bean & CheeZe Melt, first launched in August 2021, is now back in shops nationwide.

The melt had been removed at the end of 2021 to make way for the Greggs festive bake, prompting fury from customers.

Designed to mirror the Sausage, Bean and Cheese Melt, the vegan-friendly version is wrapped in layers of golden puff pastry and includes pieces of vegan sausage, grated mozzarella flavour vegan cheeZe, and of course baked beans.

It is priced from £1.65 but prices may vary at different stores.

The melt, and other dishes, can also be ordered via Click + Collect through the Greggs app or website and on Just Eat but delivery charges may apply.

The news was well received on Twitter, with one user describing it as "excellent" and another using the praying hands emoji and simply saying: "finally."

In 2019, Greggs launched its popular Vegan Sausage Roll that has since become a customer favourite.
