If you want to indulge your little ones, here’s how you can furnish a fairy grotto for less than a fiver . . .

PIX-IE A CONTAINER: If you have an old wheelbarrow, plant pot, even a tyre, it can be repurposed. Check Facebook Marketplace and the “free” section on Gumtree, as they’re often available. Just make sure there are holes at the bottom for easy drainage.

ACE YOUR BASE: Line the base with pebbles, then add Wilko’s multi-purpose compost, £1.50. For colour and that magical edge, bed in existing flowers. Or decorate with colourful stones — Wickes sells some for £4 but a jar of similar pebbles is only £1.75 at Ikea.

HIDE ’N’ SEEK: Place a fairy door in your plot. ’s blue Burrow fairy door is on offer, reduced from £6.95 to £4.95.

GO FORAGING: sells a four-piece fairy garden set. It includes a cobblestone path, archway, beehive and welcome post for £4.

But you can create your own fairy set by using nature’s very own decorations and flowers from your’s or a friend’s garden. Take the kids out to find twigs, moss and rocks. Twigs or old ice lolly sticks can be glued together to create small fences, bridges or secret doors.

You could also make your own fairy lodgings by picking up a 6cm mini birdhouse from Hobbycraft for £1, or head to The Works, who have a wooden fairy house ready to decorate for £2.

FLY AWAY WITH THE FAIRIES: It wouldn’t be a fairy garden without miniature characters. has antique bronze fairy figurines for £12.99 a piece, or head to The Range where a more colourful choice of winged figures are £1.49 each. Another idea is to use your tot’s toy figurines — it will make them smile and there’s no cost involved.
