Are Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Aldi open? Christmas and Boxing Day opening times revealed

Find out which supermarket is the nation's favourite

CHRISTMAS time is one of the busiest periods for supermarkets in the UK, as shoppers flock to their favourite stores to buy food for their Christmas dinners.

But some shops will be operating reduced hours on December 25 and 26, as well as New Year's Day. So when will your favourite supermarket be open?

Aldi

Aldi is one of the cheapest supermarkets in the country, having won Which?'s Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for three years in a row.

The budget-friendly chain will be shutting its doors early on Christmas Eve, with many branches closing at 6pm.

They will remain closed until December 27, when they resume regular hours.

However, Aldi will close early again on New Year's Eve at 6pm and will not reopen until January 2, 2025.

M&S

According to YouGov's 2024 poll, M&S is the nation's second favourite supermarket after Aldi.

The luxury brand is beloved for its glamorous food halls and wide range of options, including its vegan friendly Plant Kitchen range.

M&S will be putting its shutters down at 7pm on Christmas Eve and will reopen on December 27, before closing again on New Year's Day.

Tesco

Tesco has cornered the market when it comes to lunch, thanks to the runaway success of it's £3.50 meal deals.

Unlike most supermarkets, Tesco will only be closing on Christmas Day and will instead operate under reduced hours on December 24, 26 and January 1, 2025.

Check with your local store to see when they will be open.

TOP TESCO BUYS

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's is running similar festive hours to Tesco and will only be fully closing on Christmas Day.

The chain will also be welcoming customers on January 1, 2025.

As with Tesco, local stores may vary their opening times so ask in your local branch about their festive hours.

Morrisons

Morrisons is the fourth biggest supermarket chain in the UK and is loved for its low prices.

The supermarket also serves 9 million customers every week and is even busier during December.

To keep up with demand, Morrisons will only be closing on Christmas Day and will instead operate reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Day.

Asda

Although some Asda stores will be open for 24 hours over Christmas, most of them will shut their doors on December 25.

Hours will vary though, so ask in your local store about their opening times.

Most branches will close at 7pm on Christmas Eve and 6pm on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Co-op

All of Co-op's stores will be closed on Christmas Day.

However, they will be open later than many of their rivals on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

On those days, Co-Op's local stores will welcome customers until 8pm.

They will also be open until 7pm on Boxing Day.

Waitrose

Ahead of the busy Christmas period, Waitrose made a statement about their opening hours.

The luxury chain said: “All our shops will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with the exception of certain Shell sites.

"For New Year’s Day, some shops will be opening as normal for trading with reduced hours.”
