We test supermarket custards from ASDA, Lidl and Morrisons and this own brand beats market leader Ambrosia
CAN custard be best out of a tin? Mary Berry thinks so.
The TV chef declared this week that the trick to getting a delicious custard is to simply open a packet.
But which supermarket own-brand custards compare to the nation’s favourite, Ambrosia?
We put them to the test.
Lidl Vanilla Custard Pots, £1.29 for 4
Lidl’s custard was so creamy and sweet, with the best flavour, by far - so much so that I couldn’t stop eating it!
While it comes out of a pot, rather than a can, you get more for your money as it’s £1.29 for 600g rather than for 400g, like a usual can is.
We may have to disagree with Mary here and say that the best kind of custard is out of a plastic pot.

Morrisons Ready To Serve Custard, 400g 79p
Morrisons’ Ready To Serve custard was delicious and creamy.
It tasted more like rice pudding to start with, but with a very sweet aftertaste, which I really enjoyed.
This was another can I struggled to put down!

ASDA Ready to Serve Custard, 400g 60p
This custard tasted extremely similar to Morrisons’ Ready To Serve one, so I liked it just as much.
Like Morrisons, it had a great consistency - not too watery - although ASDA’s custard is quite a bit cheaper so could save you some of those pennies.

Ambrosia Devon Custard, 400g, £1.20, Tesco
Ambrosia may be the nation’s favourite - but it’s the most expensive and also not as tasty as some of the own-brand custards.
It tastes like rice pudding but doesn’t have the same sweet aftertaste as some of the others.
Where it does excel, however, is that it’s noticeably thicker than any of the other custards.

Stockwell & Co Custard, 385g, 42p, Tesco
Unfortunately, Tesco’s custard isn’t great. It’s extremely thin and watery and had no flavour at all.
I wouldn’t fancy pouring this over any kind of sponge cake or apple crumble.

Morrisons Savers Custard, 385g, 42p
While Morrisons’ slightly more expensive custard was delicious, the same can’t be said for its saver custard.
Like Tesco’s offering, it was thin and watery with very little flavour.
It also looked quite grey-ish just looking in the can too.

M&S Silky Smooth Custard, 400g, 70p
The taste of the custard from M&S is definitely the most similar to Ambrosia’s in that it tastes like rice pudding, and isn’t as sweet as some of the others.
But, in terms of consistency, it’s not quite as thick.
