What time is Jeremy Hunt's speech?

Jeremy Hunt will be making a speech this afternoon (October 17, 2022) as he addresses the MPs in the House of Commons at 3.30pm.

The Government website announced: "This follows the Prime Minister's statement on Friday, and further conversation between the Prime Minister and the Chancellor over the weekend, to ensure sustainable public finances underpin economic growth.

"The Chancellor will then deliver the full Medium-Term Fiscal Plan to be published alongside a forecast from the independent Office for Budget Responsibility on 31 October.

"The Chancellor met with the Governor of the Bank of England and the Head of the Debt Management Office last night to brief them on these plans."

What did Jeremy Hunt say in his mini-budget statement?

The new chancellor made his statement at 11am and back-tracked on those unveiled by former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng only a few weeks ago.

Hunt scrapped the hike to income tax and reduced household energy bill protection as well as ditching planned duty cuts on beer, cider, wine and spirits.

The National Insurance hike was also scrapped but cuts to stamp duty will stay.

Mr Hunt said: "As I promised at the weekend, our priority in making the difficult decisions that lie ahead will always be the most vulnerable and I remain extremely confident about the UK's long-term economic prospects as we deliver our mission to go for growth."

He added that there will "difficult decisions" ahead for both tax and spending.

Further details on the Treasury's plans will be made when Hunt makes a second statement in the Commons at 3.30pm.
