I tested supermarket steaks in time for New Year’s Eve – the winner is good news for bargain hunters
STEAK and chips is the ultimate dine-in meal if you plan on bringing in the New Year at home.
But as the cost of meat soars in the cost of living crisis, which supermarket steak will leave you smiling as the bells chime at midnight?
Morrisons‘ fillet steak has previously been voted the best in the UK.
Whilst budget chains Aldi and Lidl have also been praised for their meat.
So which is best for your big night in?
Lynsey Hope, 41, from West Malling, Kent, tried out some supermarket fillets and here, she reveals her favourites:
Aldi British Fillet Steak 28 Day Matured
- £4.99 for 170g
Lynsey says: “I’ll let you into a secret – I’ve been buying Aldi steak for a while and they are SO good.
“The meat is so tender and juicy, they cook well and come out of the frying pan a lovely colour.
“On the plate, they look bigger than others and oh so appetising.
“Incredible that you can buy this fillet for just £4.99. It feels like a real treat – 10/10 from me.”

Lidl Deluxe Dry Aged Hereford Steak
- £5.79 for 170g
Lynsey says: “A good price from Lidl for a decent bit of meat.
“‘Hereford’ means it comes from cattle sired by registered Hereford bulls and has a fine marbling of fat which makes it succulent and gives it a unique, rich flavour.
“It had a lovely rich flavour and was melt-in-the-mouth tender.
“Great value too. Loved it.”

Sainsbury’s British Beef Fillet Steak Expertly Matured for 21 Days
- £6 for 170g
Lynsey says: “Mixed reviews for Sainsbury’s steaks online but if you get the British rather than Irish meat as I did, I think you’ll have a good meal.
“It’s a good size with a lovely flavour.
“The meat was tender and melt in the mouth. Easy to cook.
“There was no gristle and no waste once I’d finished. I’d buy it again.”

Morrisons The Butcher’s British Beef Fillet Steak
- £5.47 for 172g

Waitrose Extra Trimmed British Beef Fillet Steak
- £8.70 for 200g
Lynsey says: “Lovely tender meat, not chewy at all.
“My kids, who can be a bit fussy and would certainly turn their noses up at chewy meat or gristle, even loved this.
“It’s a good size – a bit larger than most. Melt in the mouth.
“Delicious, if a little expensive.”

Asda Succulent Beef Fillet Steak 21 Day Matured
- £7.20 for 225g
Lynsey says: “Tasty and tender, this was a decent fillet.
“There was a little gristle but it was very juicy and flavoursome.
“It is dearer than a lot of other supermarkets and rather pricey for an Asda product but I thought it was a lovely and top quality piece of meat.”

Tesco British Beef Fillet Steak 21 Day Matured
- £6 for 170g
Lynsey says: “I’ve bought fillet steak from Tesco in the past and always found them to be good value.
“However, this was very disappointing.
“It was full of sinews, gristle and wasn’t the best taste.
“I thought it was poor quality – a waste of £6.
“Glad I didn’t buy for a special night, it would have ruined my evening.”
