Heinz has doubled the price of some products in a year – is your favourite on the list?

HEINZ is proving a sauce of anger by doubling the price of some products in a year.

Peppa Pig snap pots — pasta shapes in tomato sauce — have shot up 100 per cent from £1 to £2.

Overall Heinz has pushed up prices on 500 items across all the major supermarkets.

Bisto and Premier Foods have also raised prices — intensifying the row between retailers and producers over who is profiteering from grocery inflation.

Last week Tesco chair John Allan said producers were hiking prices “by more than they need”.

Adam Leyland, at The Grocer which revealed the Heinz rises, said: “When there’s inflation it’s inevitable some will take advantage to push up prices that little bit more. The hard part is working out who’s taking advantage, and who’s been had.”

John Bason, at Associated British Foods — the firm behind Kingsmill bread and Twinings tea — defended suppliers yesterday.

He said: “Inflation is bound to be an area of friction between us and the supermarkets.

“But our falling margins show we are not recovering all the price increases we are facing.

“The amount of inflation is the highest I have ever seen and it can’t be ignored. I think it is coming down and let’s hope it is because it is not good for the economy or society in general.”
