Four cash-saving tips to cut down on food waste by overhauling your fridge

Follow these tips and deals to get the most out of your chilled goods.

STAY COOL: The best temperature to keep food at and stop bacteria growing is five degrees or below, says the Food Standards Agency.

Avoid overfilling your fridge — it can prevent air from properly circulating, which impacts on the temperature.

If your fridge does not show its temperature, you can measure it by leaving a thermometer in the fridge overnight and taking the reading when you first open the door.

NO FORGOTTEN VEG: Most people keep fruit and vegetables in the drawer at the bottom of their fridge. But out of sight can mean out of mind.

One trick to avoid forgetting about fresh produce is to keep it front and centre of the fridge. Then use the bottom drawer for condiments or butter you are more likely to search for in the fridge.

It is best to keep raw meat and fish on the bottom shelf, which is usually the coldest part.

SORT IT OUT: A properly organised fridge makes food preparation easier and stops items being forgotten. Dividing vegetables or opened packs into smaller trays stops items rolling out of sight.

Wilko sells fridge boxes in a variety of sizes, starting from £1.50. Or B&M has an extendable fridge organiser, £2, which clips on the bottom of shelves to create an extra drawer.

KEEP CLEAN: Clean your fridge once a week to prevent bacteria lurking.

Stop spills from opened packets or leftovers by using reusable food covers. Try Covermate elasticated covers, £2.29 for a pack of eight from Lakeland. Or Tesco sells three reusable silicone lids for £3.

Anti-bacterial liners can make cleaning easier. Lakeland sells a roll for £9.99, which can be cut to measure.
