Major supermarket is making a huge change to meal deal – but shoppers will be divided

A MAJOR supermarket is making a huge change to its meal deal but shoppers will be divided.

Tesco has introduced a “Premium Meal Deal” which offers a premium main, snack and a drink for £5.

Tesco has introduced a brand new ‘premium’ meal deal for shoppers

Shoppers who fancy “levelling up” their lunch can pick up well-known brands such as itsu, YO! Sushi and Pollen & Grace as part of the deal, as well as a wide range of Tesco Finest and Wicked Kitchen mains.

There are 33 different main choices and 10 brand new Tesco Finest and Wicked products on offer as part of the new meal deal, according to Tesco.

Some of the main items on offer include:

  • Tesco Finest Roast Beef Sandwich
  • West Country Cheddar & Truffle Mayo Tiger Roll
  • Tesco Finest Chicken & N’duja Wrap
  • YO! Rainbow Salmon Poke Bowl

The deal is now available in all of Tesco’s 1,200 supermarkets but it won’t cost every customer £5.

Only Clubcard members will pay £5 for the new premium meal deal as this is a “Clubcard Price”.

Members of the loyalty scheme make a saving of up to £3.74 when compared to buying the items separately.

Shoppers without a Clubcard are charged £5.50 for a premium meal deal instead.

But shoppers can sign up for the Clubcard scheme on Tesco’s website and in-store without charge.

Members get discounts on thousands of products and we’ve previously found that shoppers can cut their grocery bills in half by using the popular scheme.

Shoppers also get one Clubcard point for every £1 spent in-store – or one point for every £2 on fuel at Tesco’s fuel stations.

Once a shopper reaches 150 points, they can be converted into vouchers worth £1.50 each.

These can be spent in-store with one of Tesco’s many reward partners.

But shoppers are divided over the cost of the new meal deal.

Posting on the Latest Deals, Extreme Couponing & Bargains Facebook Group one member said: “Who’s affording a £5 lunch every day?

“Take the fiver and buy the ingredients for sandwiches all week and just do it yourself. It’ll take five mins in the morning.”

“Shocking price!” and “What a rip-off,” said another two shoppers.

Tesco continues to offer its regular meal deal offer which costs Clubcard members £3.40.

Shoppers without a Clubcard will continue to pay £3.90 for the sandwich, snack and drink lunch deal.

Alessandra Bellini, Tesco’s chief customer officer, said: “We know that our Tesco Meal Deal is hugely popular with our customers, and is a lunchtime staple for millions of people day in, day out.

“But sometimes you want to treat yourself to something a little special, and the new premium meal deal gives our shoppers the opportunity to upgrade their usual lunch choices.

“Featuring a wide range of mains including new Finest and Wicked Kitchen sandwiches and salads, as well as options from itsu, YO! Sushi and Pollen & Grace, there are over four million combinations to be tried.”

Tesco upped the price of its regular meal deals for both Clubcard and non-Clubcard holders in October 2022 by 40p.

It meant that the meal deal Clubcard price increased from £3 to £3.40.

The price of a meal deal for non-Clubcard shoppers also increased from £3.50 to £3.90.

But, if a shopper’s selection adds up to less than £3.40, or £3.90, they only pay the price of the items.

The supermarket said its most popular meal deal combo is a Ham and Cheddar Sub, Diet Coca-Cola and Walkers Cheese and Onion Crisps – which comes to £5.24 if bought separately.

This means Clubcard shoppers can still save £1.84 with the deal, and shoppers without a card can save £1.34.

But Tesco Clubcard customers still have access to one of the cheapest meal deal offerings on the high street.

Co-op charges members £3.50 and non-members £4 for a main, snack and drink as part of its meal deal.

Morrisons and Sainsbury’s both charge £3.50 for their meal deals.

The price of Asda’s meal deals varies depending on the products picked.
