I tried supermarket own label peanut butter – the winner beats Sun-Pat and it’s the cheapest
PEANUT butter is a cupboard staple for families all over Britain.
It's incredibly versatile so always handy to have a jar on standby whether it's for baking, smoothies or lathering on toast.
In recent years, it's overtaken jam as the most popular breakfast spread.
However, as is the case for many everyday groceries, prices are rising.
A 400g jar from big brand Sun Pat will now set you back £3.50 at most supermarkets.
But will a cheaper supermarket version taste as good?

I tried some of the smooth butters on offer - each on toast to find out.
Sun-Pat Smooth Peanut Butter (400g)
- £3.50
- 61.4p per 100g
Sun Pat claims to be the nation's best tasting peanut butter and it's been on shop shelves since 1946 - but is it worth the high price given it's at least twice the price of most own brands?
It's super smooth and buttery but to be honest I found it too sweet.

It wasn't my favourite so definitely won't be adding this to the weekly shop.

Smooth Peanut Butter by Sainsbury's (340g)
- £1.50
- 44p per 100g
An inexpensive and smooth spread, which was gently balanced with sugar and salt to give that classic nutty flavour.
It's ideal for kids' sandwiches and spreading on toast and it does not contain palm oil.
For £1.50 a jar, I thought this was good value.

Aldi The Foodie Market Smooth Peanut Butter (280g)
- £1.15
- 41p per 100g
I was really impressed by this peanut butter from Aldi.
Not only is at the cheapest in our test at just 41p per 100g, but it tasted lovely.
It was grainy and less sweet than many other own brands.
It tasted more like the posher, earthier versions you can buy.
You did have to give the jar a good stir when you first open it. There's no palm oil.
I loved it and it's the cheapest per 100g and that's why it was my winner.

Essential Waitrose Smooth Peanut Butter (500g)
- £2.35
- 45.6p per 100g
This peanut butter from Waitrose has a lovely taste and a creamy more-ish texture. I loved the bigger size jar too.
It was a little more pricey than most own brands but still cheaper than the big brand offerings so would save you money if you switched to this.
It does contain palm oil though 'certified sustainable', which many experts say is better than avoiding it altogether.
A delicious and eco-friendly offering from Waitrose.

Asda Smooth Peanut Butter (340g)
- £1.50
- 44.1p per 100g
Asda's offering was quite hard and I found it too salty to taste.
It contains palm oil. Not my favourite. I wouldn't buy this again.

It was a little oily compared to others but on the whole I thought it was a decent spread at a decent price.
