How to make the most of hybrid working
FANCY living the Hy life? The pandemic showed millions of staff could do successfully do their job remotely and now hybrid working has become the UK’s most requested employment perk.
Statistics show just 30 per cent of British companies now work fully on-site.
Instead, most companies will offer some form of hybrid working to help staff juggle family commitments and cut down on the cost of commuting.
But working away from your colleagues isn’t always easy.
To help, here’s the Sun Jobs guide to making the most of hybrid working.
1. Find the right fit
Firstly, consider why you want a hybrid job. Is it to juggle caring commitments?
To live further away from work for a better lifestyle? Does splitting up the working week simply suit you better?
Assess your core reasons and how many days you want to be on site v home.
Once you have the answers, it will help you find a job which fits.
2. Be upfront when you apply
Many employers now automatically offer hybrid and WFH roles.
If you see a suitable role but it doesn’t mention hybrid working, ensure you discuss expectations with HR and the hiring manager prior to applying.
Many firms will accommodate it for the right candidate.
3. Keep it professional
Working from home means exactly that – you’ll be expected to maintain the same standards if not higher then when you’re in the office.
Have a quiet workspace screened off from the daily hustle and bustle at home.
Clock in on time, work your full hours and dress appropriately for on-screen meetings.
Yes, you may be able to fit chores into the working day, but you’re being paid to work for your company, not to clean your kitchen.
4. Stay in touch with your colleagues
When you’re working from home, be visible in the office.
Stay in touch on your internal systems like Messenger or Slack and keep your boss up to date.
Use your on-site time to be even more visible in person and book face-to-face meetings.
5. Be sensible with your savings
Working hybrid can help you save on everything from the cost of commuting to office attire to lunches.
With the cost of living crisis still looming, don’t fritter the cash.
Save what you can in case a future role means you need to be back in the office more frequently.
