Olde England Fisheries sells a small fish and chips for only £4.80 — nearly half the £9 national average.

The shop in Huddersfield, West Yorks, offers an OAP meal deal of fish, chips, bread and butter, and a cuppa for £6.50.

The price of the traditional favourite has soared by 19 per cent in the last year.

It rose by £1.44 as the cost of living crisis deepened, according to the Office for National Statistics — the biggest average hike of any takeaway in the country.

But Taher Hussain, 53, refuses to pass on the pain to his customers, who continue to flock to the family-run shop.

Dad-of-four Taher, who has owned the chippy for six years, said: “I’m not in this to make a massive profit.

“I can survive on the bare minimum.

“All I want to do is earn a living without punishing my customers.

“I could make a fast buck by increasing my prices but I’d lose all my loyal customers.

“During Covid, we closed for 11 months.

“When we reopened, they came flooding back.

“Without them I don’t have a business.”

Phil Reynolds, of Northampton, headed to Taher’s while working in Huddersfield.

Psychologist Phil, 45, said: “In Northampton, fish and chips is about £10, so this is excellent.”

Taher’s fish and chips cost less than the £5.25 charged by Tower Fisheries in Blackpool, which was named as the cheapest chippy earlier this year.
