And you can put them to good use. Here’s how . . .

REPEL BUGS: If moths have been gnawing into your clothes, conkers could be your saviour.

The Woodland Trust advises popping a few fresh horse chestnut seeds in your wardrobe. As they start to dry out, the chemicals released will repel the winged pests.

Many people swear that conkers also deter spiders. The evidence isn’t strong, but it can’t hurt to try out the theory and dot a few around your home too.

CHEAP DETERGENT: Horse chestnuts contain a soap-like chemical which can be used for cleaning.

Put smashed conkers in a jar of hot water for at least 12 hours.

Strain the milky liquid and use it as you would a liquid detergent.

However, it’s best tried on darker clothing as it could stain white or light garments.

AUTUMN DECORATIONS: Conkers add a touch of seasonal style to your home.

Display them in a tall glass vase to make a table centrepiece, along with acorns, pine cones and other goodies found in nature.

Conkers are also the perfect addition to an autumn wreath. Arrange on a ring along with seasonal foliage such as ivy and orange-coloured leaves. Use glue or wire to attach everything.

PLAY THE GAME: Teach kids the age-old game. First, select your conker for battle — the harder, the better.

Then, make a hole through the middle with a screwdriver or metal skewer and thread around 50cm of string through before knotting at both ends.

One player then dangles their conker as the other swings theirs to hit it.

Take it in turns until one of the conkers is smashed.
