I tested supermarket Milky Way dupes – the winner will save you £122 a year and you’ll never taste the difference
MILKY Ways are a classic treat for chocolate-loving Brits, an oldie but a goody.
Coated in milk chocolate and filled with sweet nougat they’re one of the nation’s top choices.
Along with the likes of Mars, Twix, Bounty and Snicker, the bars have filled the shelves of the local corner shop for decades.
They’re also one of the first chocs plucked out of the box of Celebrations come Christmas.
But, the sweet treat can be pretty expensive, especially if you’re buying for hungry kids.
A pack of six full size bars is £1.65 at Tesco, while a a share bag of 15 mini bars is £3.50.
It’s good news for savvy shoppers though because the majority of big name supermarkets actually have their own dupes – but how do they taste?
I gave them a go to find out, awarding each a score out of 10 for taste and price.
The chains only sell either full-sized bars and mini ones, for that reason we have compared the price per 100g as opposed to per pack to get an accurate comparison.
Milky Way
- £1.65 for 6 x 21.5g, or £3.50 for 15 x 15.5g
- £1.28 per 100g, or £1.40 per 100g
You can’t go wrong with the classic Milky Way bar.
The sweet combination of chocolate with nougat is a tasty one.
The softly whipped centre in one of these bars is unbeatable.
But they can be a pricey purchase, especially when looking at price per 100g.
Of all the versions I tried, perhaps unsurprisingly, they were the most expensive.

Tesco Cosmic Whips
- £1.35 for 8 x 22g
- 77p per 100g
Of all of the dupes I tried, the Tesco bars are the closest you could come to the original.
Not only that but you actually get eight bars in a pack, two more than you do with the original Milky Ways.
Even the individual bars are bigger too, topped with the signature criss-cross pattern.
The bars were really soft to bite into, with sweet chocolate and well-whipped nougat.

Morrisons Nougat Whips
- £1.15 for 6 x 22g
- 87.1p per 100g
Morrisons‘ offering were a little too nougaty for my personal taste, leaving them with a really chewy texture rather that soft.
The chocolate that coated the bar was less sweet when compared to both the Milky Way and Tesco versions.
That being said, they were a decent size and pleasant enough.
But at 87.1p per 100g they were the priciest of all the supermarket versions I tried.

Lidl Mister Choc Candy Creme Bars
- £1.05 for 15 x 17g
- 41p per 100g
Out of all of the supermarkets’ offerings, I was most disappointed with Lidl.
The chocolate reminded me of cooking chocolate, with a bland taste to it.
As with Morrisons, the centre of the bars was a very nougaty which meant they were pretty chewy.
Overall I was left with an unpleasant taste in my mouth.
The only thing that can be said in their favour is that it was the cheapest offering of all the supermarkets, even beating Aldi.

Asda Fun Size Chocolate Whirly Bars
- £1.40 for 15 x 16g
- 58.3p per 100g
Asda‘s Whirly Bars were probably the most unique tasting of each of the bars I tried.
The centre of each chocolate was more foamy as opposed to soft or chewy like others.
The chocolate coating was a bit lacking in flavour, mildly tasteless.
Although these bars are sold as mini, they did feel really quite small.
I felt hard done by, but then when I looked closer at the price I realised it was among the cheapest per 100g.
You might just need a few to fill yourself up on.

Sainsbury’s Soft & Whippy Chocolate Bars
- £1 for 6 x 22g
- 76p per 100g
Sainsbury’s Soft & Whippy bars were close to Tesco’s on taste.
They had similar combos of sweet chocolate and whipped nougat, making them nice and soft to bite into.
The only slight difference I noticed was these bars were slightly more chewy in comparison to Tesco.
Sainsbury’s bars were also a good size at 22g a bar – you feel like you’ve had a decent size snack.
Although there were only six in a pack – two less than Tesco, the cost per 100g was almost the same.

Aldi Dairyfine Dreemy Treat Size
- £1.15 for 15 x 17g
- 45p per 100g
Dairyfine is known to be a pretty decent chocolate brand amongst Aldi shoppers, offering much cheaper alternatives to pricier brand names.
For that reason I was excited to try the discount supermarket’s alternative to Milky Ways.
Overall the taste was flavoursome, with each bar containing a soft and gooey inside.
My only complaint is the chocolate coating could have been sweeter, but you’d never notice the difference if you swapped them for the real thing, rather than tasting the side-by-side.
There are a decent number of mini bars in this pack too and it works out the second cheapest overall per 100g, so is good value for money.
When compared to the price of Milky Way party bag size (£3.50) Aldi’s are a third of the price and you get more for your cash.
If it’s something you buy every week, making the switch could save you £122 a year.
