Britain’s ‘best boss’ gifts 42 employees a trip to Barcelona – and ditches hotel so they can stay in apartment together
Gary is no stranger to success having previously triumphed in BBC Two's Britain's Top Takeaways
BRITAIN’S “best boss” has gifted all 42 of his employees a free trip to Barcelona.
Gary Chin owns Sumo Pan Asian, which has restaurants in Beverley and Hessle, East Yorkshire, along with Soju by Sumo in Beverley town.
The generous boss sent all his full-time staff to sunny Spain as a reward for their tireless work throughout the year.
The 42-strong group flew out to Barcelona at 6am on Monday and will return to the UK on Thursday.
His restaurants will then reopen on Friday, after being closed to give staff their well-earned break.
Top boss Gary has made the annual trip a tradition for staff over the last 10 years.
Gary said: “It’s been a steady year for us.
“However, there is a still a cost of living crisis and the cost of energy is high.
“No matter the situation, I try to treat my staff because they need to know that they’re appreciated. I like to do this every year and everyone gets really excited for it.”
After taking on feedback from last year’s trip to Tenerife, Gary has decided to ditch staying in a hotel because his employees wanted to be closer together.
Instead, he has rented out five big apartments in Barcelona city centre, so that his guests can cook and relax together.
Speaking on how difficult it was to book, Gary said: “Of course, it takes a lot of time and money to organise. I had to think about accommodation, transport and activities.
“We have got a big bus to go to the airport in and we have planned to go to a dance together and have looked at restaurants.
“This time, we have made a big banner for the trip so we can take a group photo.”
Last year, Gary revealed that he paid around £600 per guest for the Tenerife holiday.
He has made the annual trip a tradition for a decade and hopes to make it even better next year.
From starting out in a small Newland Avenue takeaway several years ago, Gary Chin’s business is now thriving.
In 2022, Gary and his colleague Scott triumphed in BBC Two’s Britain’s Top Takeaways.
They served up Thai red tofu curry and Singapore chow mein with prawns to hungry families.
This comes as a businessman dubbed the “world’s best boss” spent more than £40k to take his team on luxury holidays.
Mark Neilson, 35, says he would rather splash the cash to reward hard work than see it collecting interest in a bank account.
Meanwhile, another generous boss gifted his entire company to a £100,000 vacation to say thanks to his staff for their tireless work over the pandemic.
Plus, ‘the UK’s best boss’ ever, who surprised his staff with a £7k trip to Ibiza, covering all costs.
Start-up founder Ashley Jones even threw in tickets to see Calvin Harris.
