Tesco contactless payment system ‘down’ as shoppers complain of huge queues in ‘absolute carnage’
TESCO customers were fuming as contactless payments went down at UK supermarkets.
All types of the supposedly easier way of paying - including Apple Pay - were not working.
Customers described long queues and chaos paying for their shopping across the UK.
The issue was due to a third-party system that has affected several other major business today.
Reports of an outage flooded at around 1pm on Saturday.
More than 400 users reported issues with contactless payments at Tesco stores.

Penny Carlton told The Sun: "I went to get a few items at my local store.
"There were huge queues at the checkouts and it reminded me of Christmas!
"What is even stranger is I paid by card using chip and pin and my bank account isn't showing any amount being debited by Tesco!
"Usually this is instant once I've used my card."

And frustrated users rushed to X, formerly Twitter, to express their anger.
One said: "If you are shopping in Tesco today be aware that they can not take contactless payment, actual card or cash only!"
Another commented: "Every time I come to #walsall there's some issue.
"The escalator isn't working, the lift isn't working, I get scan and shop checked 7/10 times, their contactless system is down & I don't have card with me… I'm so done with this place."
A third tweeted: "Silverburn Tesco queued out the door with people waiting for the self service.
"Contactless payment isn't working, it's absolute carnage."
A Tesco spokesperson said: "We have fixed a technical issue which briefly meant we were unable to accept contactless payments in store and which also impacted some online orders.
"We apologise for the inconvenience."
And it's not the first time shoppers have experienced issues with contactless payments at Tesco.
