GARLIC bread is synonymous with happiness – just ask comic Peter Kay.

One boffin even proved that serving the popular side dish “enhanced the quality of family interactions”.

Sun man James Liveris tests the best supermarket garlic baguettes to see if they’re worth their crust, and gives a mark out of five.

Aldi Carlos Two Garlic Baguettes

338g, £1.45

This choice comes to about 80p a stick, but don't pull a piece off straight out of the oven

MY immediate thought is that this loaf is quite hard to rip into two pieces.

Although, a bit of robustness is never a bad thing.

Just don’t go pulling a piece off straight out of the oven.

The fact you get two baguettes, each equating to about 75p a stick, I think Aldi’s version could be a mainstay for family meals.

Co-op Garlic Baguette

195g, £1

This £1 offering from the Co-op is a no brainer for a standard meat and two veg meal

FLIMSY, greasy and a nice brown shell – this is a humble
side.

The garlic and parsley infused filling is pungent, but welcome.

The piquant flavour would perfectly round off a standard meat and two veg meal.

Flying off the shelves for £1, this is a no brainer.

My three-ingredient cheesy garlic bread is a total game changer & only takes six minutes in the air fryer

Sainsbury’s Garlic Baguette

Sainsbury's has cut too many corners, and this certainly won't keep the vampires at bay

DRY bread and a light concentration of juice – Sainsbury’s has cut too many corners. This won’t keep the vampires at bay.

And at 156 calories for a quarter of the baguette, the damage might not be worth it.

Those who suffer a garlic bread addiction, like myself, should use this to get over it.

IF you’re the unlucky one who has to gnaw the end piece, it is worth sitting out this side dish.

After finally chomping through from the outside in, I was met with a soggy inner circle.

There’s no need to be this skimpy with the ingredients.

And while the beautiful French baguette may be its saving grace, unfortunately the only flavour here is bread.

Waitrose Garlic Baguette

COOKED for 12 minutes, as per the instructions, this baguette comes out just like an inviting picture on a bistro menu.

Even Italian nonnas would give it the nod.

A bite of the succulent dough leaves you salivating for more.

And the thick curled crust is perfect for mopping up your plate – bellissimo!

AS you open this packet you are met with a baguette that has every sliver coated in butter.

Marks & Spencer’s crust was firm, but giving – maximising the flavour.

And it turned a lovely golden brown after cooking.

Accompanied by a sprinkle of finely chopped parsley this baguette is hard to beat.

NICE bread with a textbook spread, this is clearly an all-rounder.

The baguette is soft, crunchy and sharp-edged all at once.

I was intrigued by the 16-minute cooking time, but was pleasantly surprised when I witnessed the herb butter oozing out just before serving.
