The Peacocks store, located in the main square of Ashford's County Square Shopping Centre in Kent, only just reopened after "essential electrical works" forced it to remain closed for more than a week.

But workers are now scaling back operations with the store's top floor closed and shelves looking bare, reports.

Peacocks, which once had 420 stores across the UK, has already closed more than 200 branches.

Shoppers expressed their disappointment over the latest loss in posts shared to social media.

More on store closures

One person wrote on Facebook: "Won't be anything left in town centres soon."

Another said: "I hope they will finally rename the shopping centre… Ghost Square!"

Someone else commented: "Wow so Ashford looses (sic) another clothes shop we won't have nothing left soon our town will be vape shops and hairdressers come to good old ghost town Ashford."

Pictures showed a closing-down sale is now in full swing.

Large red signs attached to racks of clothes read: "SALE."

Last month, it was revealed Peacocks is pulling down the shutters on its store in Camborne, Cornwall on April 3 - with ";a really heavy heart".

And Peacocks closed its branch in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on January 25.

One shopper said the move had left "another hole in the high street" while a second simply reacted: "tut tut."

A Peacocks in Boscombe, Bournemouth is also closing on April 6.

Peacocks collapsed into administration in November 2020 and shut half of its then-420 stores in a major blow to the high street.

The fashion chain went bust after struggling for business amid the Covid-19 pandemic and multiple lockdowns - but has slowly been building its portfolio back up to about 350 stores.

It revealed in October that it had plans to open seven new stores across WalesEngland, and Scotland.

Peacocks did not confirm the exact opening dates for the new stores.
