But there are some little-known ways that give you access to freebies and discounts on a regular basis.

From energy companies offering free Greggs items to supermarket chains dishing out free hot drinks, here's everything you can get.

Free Greggs

Greggs is already cheap and cheerful, but there are extra ways to save money at the bakery chain.

Customers can get discounted cinema tickets and National Trust days out under the "Octoplus" scheme.

But households can also get a free Greggs hot drink every week through the scheme.

You just have to download a code off the app on to your phone and scan it in-store to claim the freebie.

Free hot drinks

Most major supermarkets have loyalty schemes, which usually reward you with loyalty points for shopping in-store or online.

But Waitrose customers on its myWaitrose loyalty scheme can also claim a free hot drink if buying a qualifying purchase in-store.

Shoppers can pick up a free Americano, cappuccino, latte or tea through the offer, limited to one per day.

Retailer Ikea also runs a similar offer for customers on its Ikea Family scheme, with shoppers able to get a free hot drink every day between Monday and Friday.

You can download both loyalty schemes as apps on to your smart phone and claim the freebies by scanning in-store.

Fuel

Four major fuel station chains offer customers money off petrol and diesel to customers signed up to their loyalty schemes.

Esso, BP, Shell and Texaco all run their own schemes, with motorists able to build up points to get money off on future trips.

Some let you redeem your accrued points at their partners too, including M&S and Amazon.

BP lets customers convert their points into Avios for money off flights as well, meaning you could get that next holiday for less.

You can claim the freebies from all four fuel station chains by downloading their apps onto your smartphone.

Discounted cinema tickets

If you've got a smartphone, the chances are you could be entitled to free or discounted cinema tickets.

Vodafone offers customers two ODEON tickets for £8 through its Veryme Rewards scheme once a week.

Meanwhile, Three Mobile customers can get £3 Cineworld tickets and O2 Priority offers customers two Vue tickets for £9 once a week.

Amazon Prime customers can also get two standard ODEON cinema tickets for £10 once a month.
