‘I’m cancelling!’ moan Disney+ subscribers ahead of ‘ridiculous’ price hike coming TOMORROW

DISNEY+ subscribers have been taking to social media to vent about the "ridiculous" price hike due tomorrow.

The streaming giant is set to increase the price of its premium subscription from tomorrow leaving some customers fuming.

Changes to its subscriptions first came into force at the end of last year which saw the monthly premium price increase from £7.99 to £10.99.

However, customers already signed up to an annual plan escaped the increase at the time, but will see their bill rise tomorrow when their renewal is due.

This means that annual subscribers will now have to pay £109.90 from March 24, up from £79.90 on the previous year.

One Disney+ fan took to social media when she spotted an increase in her subscription and this prompted several comments from other users of the service.

The post read: "Bit confused here as saw Disney+ is going to charge me £109.90 a year from £79.90 on the 24th, so looked at swapping to the standard subscription, but when I looked they're the same price?"

One person commented: "Disney+ is getting way overpriced!"

Another said: "Get rid, it's the best thing I ever did."

While a third added: "I rang them and there are no other subscription options in Ireland, so I am cancelling!"

Another angry subscriber labelled the price hikes as "ridiculous."

The streaming giant introduced a new three-tier plan last year at the same time it increased its premium subscription price.

The new plan gives users of the service the option of selecting from new rates.

The new system is as follows:

• Disney+ standard (with Ads) - £4.99 a month
• Disney+ standard (without Ads) - £7.99 a month (or £79.90 annually)
• Disney+ premium - £10.99 a month (or £109.90 annually)

The two standard tiers will allow customers to stream content with a resolution of up to 1080p.

However, not everyone was particularly upset about the change, one person added: "I got angry when I saw the price increase but if you divide it by 12 it's cheaper than Netflix. Took me by surprise that one."

A Netflix standard subscription plan costs £10.99 a month, which over 12 months would cost you £131.88.

The standard Netflix subscription allows you to watch on two devices simultaneously.

Netflix also offers a premium subscription where users can watch on four devices, and this costs £17.99 a month.

How much have Disney+ subscription prices increased?

When the streaming service first launched in 2020, it cost just £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year.

This would give you access to all the TV shows and movies on the streaming service without adverts. 

However, it did not take long for the price to increase as in February 2021 the price rose to £7.99 a month, or £79.90 a year.

The price rise also came with the addition of STAR shows and movies on Disney+ programming.

But its recent increase announced in November last year has caused the most controversy.

This price rise will see some annual bills reach more than £100 a year.

How to keep your Disney+ bill down

There are ways you can keep your Disney+ bill down and still enjoy the service.

Choosing an annual subscription as opposed to a monthly one will reduce your bill regardless of which subscription tier you choose. 

For example, if you pick the Disney+ standard annual subscription you will pay £79.90 for the whole year as opposed to £95.88 split across 12 months. 

Similarly, the new premium Disney+ subscription will cost £131.88 a year if paid monthly but the annual subscription is £20 cheaper at £109.90.

Choosing a cheaper subscription tier can also help keep costs down. 

If you are prepared to sit through ads you can choose the cheapest Disney+ subscription which is just £4.99 a month.

Always check what you're actually using and cancel the services you don't make the most of.
